I love to grill. We actually grill all year long, but summertime means a lot more grilling! But when it comes to grilling, sometimes things don’t go as planned.
You can’t control Mother Nature. Two weekends ago we had plans for one of our favorite family meals – Flank Steak Sandwiches with Dill Butter. The grill was prepped, hot and steaks were seasoned and ready to go…….. when suddenly……..
That’s right! A big ‘ole summer thunderstorm rolled in! The water hissed and evaporated immediately as soon as it hit the fully-heated grill. I wasn’t going to let a little rain stop me, so I put on my rain jacket, went out to flip the steaks, only to discover we had also run out of gas! RULE #1 of gas grilling……..ALWAYS check your tank BEFORE you start! lol We have a spare tank, but changing it in a thunderstorm wasn’t an option.
So what did I do? I wasn’t about to abandon our plans for a fabulous meal, I popped those steaks in my oven to finish up on broil, and dinner carried on as planned!!
Sometimes, things just happen and you have to “sparkle through unexpected challenges”.
Since summer grilling season is upon us, I thought I’d share some great Summer BBQ Food ideas, and remember to check the gas and weather forecast!! 😉

I was recently sent some fruitwater® to try and it has quickly become a new favorite beverage around our house. This naturally flavored sparkling water beverage is great tasting and contains no juice.
fruitwater® comes in five delicious flavors to fit whatever mood you’re in — or whatever mood you want to be in.
- black raspberry flavored
- orange mango flavored
- strawberry-kiwi flavored
- lemon-lime flavored
- watermelon punch flavored
Let’s hear your #SparklingTruths. Those moments when you sparkle through unexpected challenges, brushing your shoulders off in bubbly style.

I am feeling your grilling pain. It’s rained daily for three weeks and I live in NC? What’s with that?? Love Fruit water – it’s so refreshing.
You are a trooper for getting out there in the storm and then having to use the oven too! I probably would’ve given up and ordered a pizza. 😉
With a busy little athlete in our house, we love Fruit Water- I love that it’s natural and he loves that it’s not plain water!
if it hadn’t been one of my family’s favorite meals I might have just ordered pizza haha!!!
Way to persevere! Have not tried the Fruit Water yet, but it does look pretty good! 🙂
Aww…cute photos, Cheryl! I try to treat life’s challenges as serendipity and just roll with it. Somehow, it always works! Finishing steaks in the oven is how it is done after searing on the stovetop anyway, so way to go! Thanks for sharing! xo
Life is a lot less stressful if you live that way!! 😉
Yay for perseverance and sparkling! I’m sure the steaks were dee-lish.
You go girl – no thunderstorm is stopping you!!! Those sandwiches sound delish!!!
Sorry 🙁 The sparkling water looks great!
What an awesome hostess! Way to show that storm who was in control. I have not tried fruit water either. Looks yummy! Thanks for sharing this Cheryl!
I love the shot of you trying to shield your steaks from the rain! I would have done the same 🙂
Our weather has been like that here too!! We’ve had thurderstorms almost every night. When my sister was here we had planned to take our family pictures and we had to squeeze it in inbetween storms. I loved those pictures Cheryl!
xoxo
Haha, been there with the lousy grilling weather! Usually I just give up and broil it or pan fry it. You are intrepid!
I think I’ve lived that same rainy grilling story! Those fruit waters look awesome, I’ll look for them!
What a trooper you are for grilling in the rain! Way to go!
We BBQ all year round too. Fortunately, I’ve got a covered patio. I’ve learned how to sparkle when traveling. Unexpected things happen and often those are the things you remember most.
Way to go Cheryl! We had a BBQ last summer and one of the guys actually grilled in pouring rain – he refused to stop! I have to say, I’d just turn on the oven if that had been me.
Love your rain photos! LOL!
i think it’s save to say, i would love everyone of your selections up there.
You look so cute in your raincoat and shorts! hee hee. I want to try that black raspberry!
Grilling isn’t fun in the rain, I recall my mom running out in the rain many nights when I was young to grill dinner, we don’t get much rain here…i think So Cal has been in a drought forever, but it is funny how the days I want to grill it’s raining 🙂 Fruit water sounds good, I’ll have to go get some!
Ole is known to grill through snowstorms and blizzards. He even fires up his smoker, placing a refrigerator box over the top to insulate it from the feet of snow that surround it.
Those photos are so cute!
Everything looks amazing. Loving all of the bbq, what a fun give away! A guess a Sparkling Truth is that my son is Autistic and starting a new school year is always very stressful…so I am praying and hopeful for a good school year. I must try the fruitwater!
