Banana Bread Recipe
I think we all know that banana bread is having a moment right now, and I am not complaining. I’m only questioning why everyone is just now realizing the greatness that this a simple loaf of banana bread.
This easy recipe for the best banana bread is simple to throw together with just a handful of staple pantry ingredients but produces high-quality bakery results. The overly ripe bananas make for a moist texture providing us with a perfectly soft sweet dessert that no one can resist.
One bite and you’ll be hooked! Trust me, my family hasn’t gone a month without requesting this recipe in over 10 years!
How To Know When Your Bananas Are Ripe Enough For Banana Bread
When choosing bananas to use for your banana bread recipe, it’s important to make sure they are perfectly ripe. You don’t want any remnants of green left on the peel. The bananas should be completely ripe, with brown spots present on the peel. I typically judge the “readiness” of my bananas by letting them ripen about 2 days past the last day I would consider them still acceptable to eat plain, as a snack.
Can I Freeze Bananas?
If you want to stock up on over-ripe bananas until you have enough to make this banana bread recipe, store them in the freezer. You can store bananas in the freezer as is for up to 4 months. Once you have enough to make your recipe, simply let them thaw at room temperature for a few hours, or until soft.

This moist banana bread recipe is easily the most requested recipe from my family, which is why I’m so thankful it’s easy to throw together.
All you have to do to make your own homemade chocolate chip banana bread is this: Start by greasing the bottom of a loaf pan and set aside. Next, you will use an electric mixer to cream together sugar and butter, then add in the eggs one at a time. Once all the eggs have been added, you’ll mix in milk, bananas and vanilla.
Next up is the dry ingredients. You will stir in all dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Pour the completed batter into the greased loaf pan and bake until the bread is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Optional ad-ins:
- Chocolate chips
- Peanut butter chips
- Walnuts
- Pecans
- Cinnamon Sugar swirl
- Vanilla or cream cheese glaze
Secrets To Making The Best Banana Bread
Grease the pan: If you’re anything like me, you like to err on the side of over-greasing the pan to avoid sticking, but if you want a picture-perfect banana bread, then you should avoid over greasing. Only grease the bottom of the pan, and a 1/2 inch up the sides to produce an even loaf with a nice rounded top (greasing all the way up the sides will produce a loaf with a flat top).
Properly mix the ingredients: Do NOT overmix the batter! This is not a cake, so no need to mix until completely smooth. The batter should be thick and lumpy to produce a soft texture and consistent crumb. Overmixing can cause a heavy, uneven loaf.
Don’t Over Bake: The best way to check the doneness of your chocolate chip banana bread is to stick a toothpick in the center. If it comes out clean, or with just a few crumbs attached, you’re good to go! If the middle is still gooey, but the top is already perfectly browned, place a sheet of foil over the top to prevent the top layer from burning.
Ways To Store and Serve Banana Bread
Banana bread can be served and stored a few different ways depending on your preferences.
- Room temperature: This is my preferred way to store this recipe for the best ever banana bread. Simply cover the loaf pan with foil or plastic wrap and store it on the counter for up to 5 days.
- Refrigerated: If you prefer your bread to have more stability, try storing it in the refrigerator. The cold temperature will firm up the banana bread making it easier for spreading butter or any other toppings. To store in the refrigerator, cover the loaf pan with foil or plastic wrap, or place it in an airtight container.
- Frozen: To store for later, let the bread cool completely, then simply cover the entire loaf with plastic wrap and store for up to 4 months.
How To Reheat Banana Bread:
To serve warm, wrap a slice of your banana bread in a paper towel and microwave for 10-15 seconds. Top with a swipe of butter for a delicious breakfast or snack!

It’s so nice that you all have such a good time together and enjoy cooking and baking together. I know that feeling of time flying and the years whizzing by, you are so right to be enjoying this time with your daughters it’s precious.
I love chocolate chips in my banana bread! Thanks for another yummy recipe! Love those beautiful smiles!
I love this post, Cheryl. Beautiful.
Chocolate Chip Banana Bread is my absolute favorite. Now, I just need to convince my husband, who prefers his the regular, old-fashioned way.
This brought tears to my eyes, Cheryl and I needed to read this. I had an extremely frustrating day with my oldest yesterday and I need to remember, this too shall pass…and it will pass too quickly, at that!
You two are too cute!! I love that you enjoy spending time together like you do. I hope that my son and I are always like that too!!
SO TRUE Cheryl! It’s exactly my reality with my 13 & 10 yr old daughters! Time is just whizzing by at lightning speed. Time spent with them…especially laughing (usually AT me instead of with me, which is o.k. by me too) and creating in the kitchen is such an awesome bonding time! Great post!
I wonder if your beautiful daughter is saying *MOM! Did you have to point out my chipped nail polish?!* LOL
I love banana bread, it is so easy to whip up and it is such a quick and delicious snack (breakfast) for me.
My Mom would make banana breads on a weekly basis and her *rule of thumb* for baking hers was that it was ready when the top split open. Her’s always did and they were always delicious.
Y’all are just too cute!! How fun it is to laugh and share times like these with daughters, huh? I cannot WAIT to try this recipe out! It looks amazing! thank you for sharing it!

thats so true,..;-
Such a sweet post, Cheryl! My husband and I both love to have Alice help in the kitchen with us. She’s really great too! She’s only 2 and a half and is already a MASTER crescent roll maker. The ones you unfold and roll from the cans, but still she’s got it down perfect! 🙂
I have like ten comments…first of all, I would have NEVER thought you had older kids…just by looking at you, you looked like 10-12 year old having mom. Second, I LOVe letting the kids help cook. That was actually a big disagreement between my hubby and I. He DOES not like them in the kitchen. He’s afraid they will get burned or cut, ect…but I think it’s the only way to learn. Even if they do get a little hot lesson every once in a while. I really fought him on that.
Banana bread is one of the best things mom did for us. It brings back find memories. And it’s reassuring to know that you are a messy baker too.
Belle made our worst kitchen disaster to date. It was her job to turn on the mixer. She was suppossed to do one click. She turned it on full speed full of flour and cocoa. The poor boys were horrified (of course they were peering into the bowl) Great memories =)
What great pics of your girls! It’s so great that you guys are so close.
Of course that banana bread is pretty rock’n too!
I love this recipe, and I too enjoy baking with and for my family. My 8 year old just loves to help make things in the kitchen!
Banana bread looks so perfect…am sure must be delicious too
BEAUTIFUL post Cheryl. My children are 10 years apart, 17 & 27 and I hold on tight to the one left at home because I know how incredibly quickly it goes after the 27-year old is living on her own and getting married this summer. My son still says “I have the best mom in the world” every time he bites into a cookie. I am truly blessed. Thanks for sharing!
Love Chocolate Banana Bread! My husband is a bread loving crazed person! So this is prefect for us!
I love spending time with my mom 🙂 This banana bread looks awesome. Will have to give it a try. Happy Monday!
Yummy! I love chocolate chip banana bread! FYI….you don’t have to take the bananas out of their skin to freeze them. I put mine straight into my freezer skin and all and then when I am ready to use them, I just thaw them, then cut the tip off and squeeze the banana out. So easy!
These do sound delish! I’m so trying this after my trip. Bookmarking now! Thanks.
I certainly love my banana bread – I’ll be sure to try this out! It sounds fabulous!
Mary

Love the photo of you and your daughter. So precious!
One of my favorite foods of all time. It makes me think of a funny story from my childhood. I had a friend visiting one afternoon, and my mom asked her if she liked banana bread. My friend said yes, eagerly hoping my mom would have a batch ready to be sliced….But instead, my mom handed her two blackened bananas and said, “here, go make some!” It was hysterical!
Yum!! I think my kids would love this!! Oh who am I kidding…I would LOVE this recipe! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Banana bread is one of my favourites but chocolate chip banana bread… even better!
Such a sweet post, and great advice, Cheryl. I always had my kids standing on chairs helping me bake. At 5 my son could crack an egg perfectly without getting any shells in the batter. Now, it’s the grandkids:)
I just made your recipe this morning for the Chocolate Chip Banana Bread & raved about it on my blog. I just wanted you to know so if anyone makes a comment about it, you’ll know where it’s coming from. It’s truly delicious.

I just made this recipe and it is phenomenal! Thank you! 🙂
I’m going to try this recipe today with my 2 year old son. He loves to cook with me!
Made this this morning- so quick and easy to prepare. The hardest part was waiting for it to finish baking so I could dig in 🙂 I also used parchment paper to line the loaf pan so it made for easy removal AND easy cleanup 🙂 Thank you so much for the delicious recipe!
Thank you for this excellent recipe. It is a huge hit with my partner (who requests it almost every week), and also with his co-workers who eagerly anticipate the next time I’ll send in a loaf.
I brought the recipe home to my parents and sister during the holidays, and was met with pleased surprise that a “chocolate chip banana bread could really work.” They enjoyed the pleasant cinnamon surprise as well!
I remember cooking with my parents as a child, which has definitely inspired my love of cooking to this day, so definitely keep up cooking with the girls!
Thanks again, and hope you don’t mind if I post the recipe (credited of course) to my own blog! Cheers!
This looks fabulous Cheryl! And it makes me excited/anxious for my daughter to grow up (but not too fast). Just yesterday she wanted to help me put the dishes away!
I want to make this bread like I make my chocolate chip cookies: with big chunks, small chunks, and slivers of chocolate. Thanks for the recipe.
Waiting on my first attempt at this recipe now. It has already backed an hour, but it isn’t cooked all the way through. It failed the toothpick test. Also, my bread seems to have risen much higher than what is shown in your first picture. Hmm?
*baked
I’m gone to say to my little brother, that he should also visit this weblog on regular
basis to take updated from most recent news update.
I’m going to make this “Elvis” style and make a Fluffernutter icing!!!!
Quick question – how many mini loaves does one batch make?
it depends on the size of your mini pans – but usually 2-4 loaves.
Hi Cheryl!
With me, Chocolate Chip Banana Bread is my absolute favorite.
