Butterscotch Schnapps Spiked Hot Chocolate

Time to get the holidays started on a good note! What better way to do that than with a nice hot cup of cheer filled with hot chocolate, butterscotch schnapps, and rum!

Warm velvety chocolate pairs perfectly with the spiced rum that packs just enough punch to really warm you up this season. I can picture it now, cozied up by the fire, wrapped up in a blanket as I sip on a spiked hot chocolate with the Christmas tree in the background as the wind whips around outside. Doesn’t that sound like the best winter night?

Whether you’re making one for yourself, or enough for a whole party there’s no one that won’t love this hot chocolate! So, let’s get started and make all your winter days merry and bright!

How To Make Spiked Hot Chocolate

Would you ever think something that looks this good could be so easy? I love how quick it is to throw together such a delicious and festive drink that I can sip on while I binge watch all the Hallmark Christmas movies.

All you need to do is mix up your hot cocoa according to the directions listed in the recipe card. Then add vanilla extract, the alcohol, and a dash of bitters to the hot chocolate and stir. Finally just add your toppings and garnish with a cinnamon stick or candy cane.

And there you go! In just a few minutes time you have a drink that will warm you up all night long!

Can I Make This Spiked Hot Chocolate Non-Alcoholic?

Yes, you can! It might seem crazy because without the booze isn’t it just hot chocolate and whipped cream? Not quite! There are a couple great substitutes you can throw in to replicate the flavors the alcohol brings to this amazingly cozy drink.

Butterscotch Schnapps Substitute: Butter Beer, or as muggles would call it butterscotch soda. This might make your drink a little fizzy because of the carbonation, so if you want to avoid that try butterscotch syrup

Spiced Rum Substitute: You can replace the rum with a rum flavored syrup, or you can make your own rum flavored mixture. This can be done with pineapple or apple juice, and a little bit of molasses and almond extract. There are exact measurements for this combo its kind of just a trial and error recipe based on your preferences.

For both of these substitutes, you will use the same measurements used for the alcohol. I have not personally tried this non-alcoholic version, so if you try it and like it be sure to let me know in the comments below!

Customize Your Spiked Hot Chocolate

Grab your favorite hot cocoa mix: Want to make this recipe even easier than it already is? Well then skip the directions for homemade hot chocolate and pick up your favorite mix instead.

I personally love the s’mores hot chocolate mix from World Market. The chocolate, marshmallow, and graham cracker flavors mix perfectly with the butterscotch schnapps and rum! Other good flavors would be salted caramel, dark chocolate, or gingerbread!

Try it with flavored whipped cream: Have you seen all the new favored whipped creams coming out? They all sound sooo good and I bet they would be even better on top of this hot chocolate. I would die for the peanut butter whipped topping on this hot chocolate.

You could also make your own flavored whipped cream like:

Caramel Whipped Cream
2 cups whipping cream
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 teaspoons caramel flavor

Whip the cream to soft peaks.  Add the sugar and flavor and continue whipping.

Butterscotch Whipped Cream
2 cups whipping cream
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 teaspoons butterscotch flavor

Whip the cream to soft peaks.  Add the sugar and flavor and continue whipping.

Add a hot chocolate topper: Not everyone is a whipped cream lover, but that doesn’t mean they have to suffer without any fun topping on their spiked hot chocolate.

Hot chocolate toppers are a fun way to add a little something extra to an already tasty treat. You can buy premade toppers or make your own, like these snowman toppers.
