Easy Chocolate Covered Strawberry Cupcakes
If you love chocolate-covered strawberries, you’re going to love these cupcakes! Chocolate and strawberries is one of my favorite flavor combos ever. I mean, who doesn’t love the fresh, sweet, juicy bite of a strawberry combined with rich and creamy chocolate? It’s absolutely heavenly.
These sweet treats are pretty easy to make, too! When I first made a batch of these cupcakes years ago, I handed them out to a few neighbors. On that very same day, everyone was calling me and asking for the recipe! None of them could believe how easy it was to follow all of the steps in this cupcake recipe.

It’s difficult to pick a favorite part of the cupcake. The fudgy cake itself is incredible, but the creamy strawberry filling is to die for! However, everyone in my family pretty much agrees that the dreamy chocolate cream cheese frosting is the best. If you have little ones in the house, don’t be surprised when they fight over who gets to lick the frosting bowl!
How to Make Chocolate Covered Strawberry Cupcakes
(full printable recipe at the end of this post)
You need to make this cupcake recipe in 3 different parts – the chocolate cupcakes (my favorite cupcake recipe using a cake mix), the strawberry cream filling, and the chocolate cream cheese frosting. Don’t worry, though. The end result is so incredible, you’ll see making these as a labor of love!
For the chocolate cupcakes, you’ll need to:
Start by preheating your oven to 350° F and prepare cupcake pans with cupcake papers.
While the oven is heating up, combine the chocolate fudge cake mix, with water or milk, eggs, and melted butter in the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat on low for one minute, then mix on high for another minute. Do not over mix.
Once the batter is ready, divide the batter evenly into cupcake liners, filling each two thirds full, and bake for 17-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out with a few moist crumbs. Remove the cupcakes from the oven and allow them to cool for 2 minutes, then remove to a cooling rack to finish cooling.
How To Make The Strawberry Whipped Cream Filling:
Chocolate Covered Strawberry Cupcakes need strawberries, right?! Use a blender to chop four large strawberries. I like to use my Magic Bullet, but any blender should do the trick! Process until the berries look a bit liquidy, and set aside.
In a large bowl combine the heavy cream and vanilla. Using an electric mixer with a whisk attachment beat on medium speed until foamy, about one minute. Gradually add sugar and increase speed to high. Beat until medium-stiff peaks form, about 2 minutes. Gently fold the blended strawberries into the whipped cream. Set in refrigerator until ready to use.
Time To Make That Delicious Homemade Chocolate Frosting:
First, place the butter in a large mixing bowl and blend until smooth. Next, add the cream cheese and blend until well combined. This should take about 30 seconds.
Now, add the cocoa powder. Make sure to do this before adding the powdered sugar! That way, it gets fully incorporated into the butter and cream cheese.
Next, add the vanilla extract and powdered sugar. Blend everything together on low speed until combined. Then, increase to medium speed and beat until the mixture begins to get nice and fluffy.
Slowly add the heavy cream a little bit at a time until the desired consistency is met. Be careful not to add too much! If you want the frosting to stay in place when piped on cupcakes, you want it on the thicker side. Continue to beat until fluffy, about 1 minute.
TIP: I recommend using this frosting at once. However, you can keep it refrigerated. This chocolatey frosting will keep well in the refrigerator for several days, but you may need to re-beat it for the best texture.
How To Assemble Chocolate Covered Strawberry Cupcakes:
Once the cupcakes are baked and completely cooled, it’s time to fill the cupcakes. Using a small knife with a pointed tip (like a paring knife), cut out a small cone-shaped section from the center of the cupcake. Set the cone-shaped section aside keeping it intact as much as possible. Fill each hole with strawberry whipped cream using a pastry bag or a zip-top bag with a corner snipped off.
Remember those pieces of cake you saved? Use them to replace the tops. Just do the best you can – or you could just leave them off! Frosting will cover them either way.
Now they are ready to frost.
Finally, pipe chocolate frosting on top of each cupcake with 1M tip, and enjoy!
Tips For Icing Chocolate Strawberry Cupcakes
- Let the cupcakes cool completely – If the cupcakes are even slightly warm the icing will start to melt, and the frosting will slide off the cupcakes.
- Chill the frosting – Working with firm icing provides more structure to work with so if your frosting is a little soft, put it in the refrigerator for a bit. This will allow it to firm up so you can pipe the frosting onto the chocolate strawberry cupcakes.
- Use a piping bag and a metal tip – Using the piping method gives the cupcakes a professional appearance and is just as simple as the spread on method.
- Squeeze the piping bag to remove any air pockets – You don’t want any surprise air pockets ruining your perfect frosting, so be sure to squeeze the frosting towards the tip of the bag to release any air before you start frosting.
Storage and Variations
Do these chocolate strawberry cupcakes need to be refrigerated? While most cupcakes can be left on the counter, I recommend keeping these in the refrigerator in an airtight container. That’s the best way to ensure the whipped filling stays fresh!
Can I make these cupcakes ahead of time? You sure can! These cupcakes will stay fresh in the fridge for 3-4 days, so just make sure you serve them within that window of time.
Variations:
- I’ve made these cupcakes in reverse before, and they were just as good! I filled the cupcakes with chocolate frosting and topped with the strawberry whipped cream. It was a fun way to shake things up a bit!
- Garnish with a chocolate-dipped strawberry, holiday candy or sprinkles.
- Don’t be afraid to have fun making chocolate covered strawberry cupcakes with a Valentine’s theme. Between choosing cute cupcake liners, sprinkles, and candy, there are so many festive ways to dress up these sweet treats.

Ingredients
Chocolate Fudge Cupcake
- 1 Duncan Hines Moist Deluxe Dark Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix

Strawberry Whipped Cream (filling)
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 5 large strawberries
Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting (from Glorious Treats)
- ½ cup butter, at room temperature

- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa
- 4 cups powdered confectioners sugar
- 1-4 Tablespoons heavy whipping cream
Instructions

- Remove the cupcakes from the oven and allow to cool for 2 minutes, then remove to a cooling rack to finish cooling.
Strawberry Whipped Cream (filling)
- Chop strawberries in a blender (I used my Magic Bullet) just until they look thick and “liquidy”. Set aside.

Directions for Chocolate Fudge Cupcakes with Strawberries & Cream filling topped with Chocolate Frosting
- Once the cupcakes are baked and completely cooled, it's time to fill the cupcakes. Using a small knife with a pointed tip (like a paring knife), cut out a cone-shaped section from the center of the cupcake (be generous here, there is plenty of filling). Set the cone-shaped sections aside keeping them intact as much as possible. Fill each hole with strawberry whipped cream using a pastry bag or a zip-top bag with one corner cut off.
- Replace the tops. Just do the best you can – or you could just leave them off! Frosting will cover them either way.
- Now they are ready to frost. Pipe chocolate frosting on top of each cupcake with 1M tip, decorate with sprinkles, candy or a fresh strawberry, and enjoy!

Hi! I've recently found your blog and absolutely love it!! I'm excited to try this recipe and was wondering if you've ever tried freezing these once they are completely assembled? I'm making them for 2 different b-day parties this week and was thinking of making them all at the same time and freezing them for the 2nd party. What do you think? Thanks!! =)
I would freeze them with out the filling/frosting and they'll be fine – filling and frosting is quick.
