How To Make The Best Santa Munch Christmas Popcorn!

(Full recipe at the end of the post)

Who doesn’t love a delicious snack that can be thrown together in a flash? With all of the hustle and bustle of the busy holiday season, I definitely love to have a quick and easy snack I can enjoy when things get a little crazy. That’s why this Santa munch is going to be my best friend all season long!

I love that I only have to place popped popcorn, M&Ms and cake mix powder into a large bag and coat. Then spread the coated popcorn and candies onto a prepared sheet pan. Drizzle with melted white chocolate, and sprinkle with Christmas sprinkles. Then it’s time to break apart and enjoy!

Make this Christmas Popcorn Your Own

The best part of this snack mix is how easy it is to switch it up! I love taking the basic ingredients for this Christmas popcorn and making it fit for every holiday or birthday that comes up!

It’s as easy as swapping the M&Ms and sprinkles for the respective event or holiday you have coming up. This mix is the perfect way to make any occasion a little extra festive!

Some other good ways to enhance this Christmas popcorn, even more, would be to replace the plain M&M’s with your favorite M&M flavor, like dark chocolate, caramel, or if you can find it I highly suggest trying out the new seasonal hot chocolate flavor! You don’t have to stick with M&M’s, why not try different festive sweets such as mini candy canes or marshmallows.

You could also switch the white chocolate to milk or dark chocolate if you’re not much of a white chocolate fan. Or drizzle with red and green candy melts for more color.

You Have Popcorn Questions, I Have Answers

What kind of popcorn should I use? Feel free to use homemade popcorn, microwave or even store bought. Really you can use whatever popcorn you prefer! We’ve used unbuttered microwave popcorn which made it harder to get the powder to stick to the popcorn, but it was still amazing! So, because of that little hiccup, I have found that buttered popcorn yields better results, but it’s ultimately up to you.

If you pop your own popcorn just make sure to remove any unpopped kernels. I haven’t made it with sweet popcorn like kettle corn or caramel corn, but if you want something, extra sweet, I’m sure both would taste amazing!

How long will it keep? Unfortunately, popcorn goes stale fast. This Christmas popcorn will only last 4-5 and needs to be kept in an airtight container or zip top bag. To experience this snack as its best I suggest eating it fresh, the day it’s made.

Can I freeze it? I know we all love to be able to make extras to save for later, but unfortunately, this is not one of those recipes that can be frozen. While you can technically freeze popcorn to delay it from getting stale, that will only work for a couple weeks at best. Also with the added toppings, the mixture as a whole will not freeze well.

Spread Some Cheer With Christmas Popcorn

I know it’s going to be tempting to eat this entire pan of popcorn the moment you taste it, but if you have the willpower to give some up, it makes for the cutest gifts!

You can make a cute little gift basket and pair a bag of Christmas popcorn with a cute festive mug, some homemade sugar scrub, and a fudge wreath! Talk about the perfect present! If you want to gift just the snack mix, I suggest picking up a cute bucket or Christmas tin, tied with ribbon and a personalized Christmas tag

I love the idea of giving these to teachers, or co-workers as a little seasonal thank you for all of their hard work. There’s nothing that makes people in a good mood more than a little surprise that involves a tasty treat they can snack on while at work.

Christmas popcorn also makes a perfect party favors just divide the mixture into cellophane bags and tie with a pretty ribbon.

Santa Munch Christmas Popcorn Treat

Yield: about 10 cups
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Hands-Off Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes
Santa Munch Christmas Popcorn is an irresistible snack mix even Santa will love.

Ingredients

  • 8-10 cups popcorn. lightly buttered, popped and salted (homemade or microwave)
  • 1/2 cup white cake mix powder*
  • 16 ounces white chocolate, melted (or almond bark or candy melts)
  • 1/2 cup Christmas sprinkles
  • 1 cup holiday M&M candies

Instructions

  1. Line a sheet pan with parchment or waxed paper.
  2. Place popped popcorn (be sure to remove any unpopped kernels), M&Ms and cake mix powder in to a large bag (we use a paper shopping bag) and shake well to coat. Note, the cake mix will stick better if you use buttered popcorn. Alternately, you can do this in a large bowl and stir, but I find shaking it in a bag much easier.
  3. Spread coated popcorn and candies onto prepared sheet pan. Drizzle with a little more than half of the melted white chocolate, tossing gently a few times with a rubber spatula to cover popcorn. Sprinkle with half of the Christmas sprinkles. Drizzle with remaining chocolate and add more sprinkles.
  4. Allow to cool and harden for at least 30 minutes, then gently break into pieces and store in an airtight container. Enjoy right away!

Notes

  • We have made this with unbuttered popcorn and the cake mix did not stick as well, but it was still delicious.
  • We use 2-3 bags of microwave popcorn
  • *if you are concerned about raw flour in the cake mix, either omit the cake mix or you can heat treat it first by microwaving the cake mix on high for 1 minute and 15 seconds, stirring at 15 second intervals.
