Christmas Cookie Season
Every year, as soon as the calendar flips to December, you can find me in full Christmas mode all month long. You can find me listening to nonstop Christmas music, watching all the Hallmark Christmas movies, and of course baking loads of festive treats.
To make sure I never run out of Christmas cookie recipe ideas, this month I’m teaming up again with some incredibly talented blogger friends for another addition in the Tastes of the Season Holiday Recipe series. Each month through the end of the year, we have been sharing seasonally inspired recipes!
This month, we’re gearing up for Christmas with a part of the holiday season I love the most — Christmas Cookies. Along with these Christmas Gooey Butter Cookies I’ll be linking up all 25 delicious cookie recipes at the end of this post. Be sure to visit each one for even more holiday-inspired cookies.
How To Make Christmas Gooey Butter Cookies
Of course, you can change up the flavor of gooey butter cookies with the cake mix you use. You can also change the color of the sprinkles for any occasion or omit them completely.
When you are making this recipe, you’ll want to use the full recipe at the bottom of the page.
This gooey butter cookie recipe is a great one to keep in your back pocket because it’s so simple to make. It’s always my go-to for a last-minute dessert with how quickly the recipe comes together.
To make the cookies, start by using an electric mixer to cream together the cream cheese and butter until smooth, then add the egg and extracts and continue mixing, scraping sides of the bowl as needed until combined. Next, add cake mix and beat until well blended and stir in some of the sprinkles. Once the dough has been mixed, cover the dough and refrigerate for a couple of hours.
When you’re ready to bake the cookies, preheat oven and line a baking sheet with parchment and set aside. To prepare the cookies, scoop out 1-inch size balls of chilled dough, and lightly roll each ball in the remaining sprinkles then roll in powdered sugar.
Lastly, place dough balls on prepared pan about two inches apart and bake. Remove the cookies from the oven, allow to cool a few minutes on the pan before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely. Sift powdered sugar on top if desired.
Test Your Oven Temperature
Before you start baking these Christmas gooey butter cookies, or any other holiday treats this season, you’ll want to make sure your oven is in tip-top shape, so all your treats come out perfect.
Every year right before the holidays I make sure to test my oven to make sure it’s heating correctly. Whenever you end up with a kitchen fail, like a soggy pie crust, or sunken in muffins, you might think it’s your fault, but it actually might be the oven’s fault.
A lot of baking problems stem from the fact that your oven isn’t actually heating to the temperature it says it is. This problem can easily be fixed with the help of an oven thermometer.
An oven thermometer can tell you whether your oven runs hot or cold. While the thermometer can be super helpful you can also test your oven for hot spots to see whether the heat is uneven or where the cold spots are.
How Do I Store Gooey Butter Cookies?
I always say that anything gooey butter is best on the second or third day when stored right. Once all those flavors really soak into each other, its pure bliss!
To store your Christmas gooey butter cookies, simply wait for them to cool completely and transfer them into an airtight container. You can leave them to sit on the counter at room temperature for 4-5 days, or you can store them in the refrigerator if you prefer your cookies slightly chilled.
If you want to store your gooey butter cookies even longer, you can also place the airtight container of cookies in the freezer. They will keep in the freezer for up to 4 months.
Other Ways To Make Gooey Butter Recipes
While I love gooey butter cookies, I love gooey butter cake even more! So, if you love these Christmas gooey butter cookies, and want other ways to make some delicious gooey butter desserts, then try a few of my favorite recipes.

Scooping perfectly symmetrical cookies has never been easier when you use a cookie scoop like this one. It really makes the whole process go so much faster. I never make a batch of cookies without my favorite scooper!
This is my favorite sheet pan to use. I have about 4 I use in my kitchen pretty much every time I bake anything that needs a baking sheet. They are perfect oversized pans!
The pre-cut parchment sheets are a lifesaver, and they fit perfectly in the above-mentioned sheet pan. You never have to mess with measuring and cutting out parchment paper from the roll again with these.

Hi! I’m in Lake Saint Louis and wondering which bakery/deli/store sells the best gooey butter cookies in the area? I’ve tried some good and some bad but want to try the best! Thank you
I rarely buy them, we usually make them since they are so easy to make. I think I’ve only had them from Schnucks, and they’re always good!
Can’t wait to try these!!
Can the dough be made ahead of time so it chills overnight, while the cookies are baked the following day?
