Epic Bananas Foster French Toast
Sometimes you want a breakfast that’s filling, delicious, and a little indulgent. This banana french toast checks all of those boxes, it’s no surprise it’s become a family favorite at our house.
A while back, we enjoyed a late breakfast out and Allison had a heavenly french toast sprinkled with caramelized bananas and topped with creamy caramel syrup and whipped cream. She talked about that french toast for weeks! Needless to say, we decided we needed to re-create this banana foster french toast at home.
So, what makes this french toast so irresistibly mouthwatering? The sweet homemade caramel sauce, freshly cut bananas, and my two secret ingredients all come together to make one truly unforgettable breakfast experience. Bananas Foster French Toast is an easy, yet impressive breakfast that you’re bound to fall in love with!
Ingredients For Easy Banana French Toast
- eggs and milk – the standard for french toast
- orange juice – “secret ingredient #1” adds a little “wow” factor that makes you go “Yum!”
- sugar and salt
- thick-sliced bread, like Texas Toast but Challah, Brioche, or Italian bread, will work too.
- vanilla extract – for the best flavor, be sure to use pure vanilla extract and not imitation vanilla
- bacon grease or butter – for frying. Bacon grease is my other secret ingredient and makes such a delicious difference!
- bananas – ripe, but still firm
- brown sugar – makes the caramel
- cinnamon
How To Make Bananas Foster French Toast
(full printable recipe at the end of this post)
STEP ONE: Preheat your oven to 350° F
STEP TWO: In a large bowl whisk together the french toast ingredients. Soak the bread slices in the egg mixture until saturated – you may have to do this in batches.
STEP THREE: Add bacon grease or butter to a large skillet and fry the bread in the hot skillet turning once until both sides are browned (3-4 minutes per side). Place the french toast on a baking sheet and transfer it to the preheated oven to stay warm.
STEP FOUR: Wipe out the skillet and over medium-high heat add butter and brown sugar and cook until carmelizes. Add banana slices and cinnamon and cook until they’re lightly brown and caramelized.
Serve the french toast piping hot! Top it with spoonfuls of caramelized bananas, and enjoy. I also recommend serving with a delicious dollop of whipped cream on top.
Tips For Successful French Toast
This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my disclosure policy here.
- Thoroughly whisk the egg mixture until everything is combined. You don’t want egg whites showing up on your perfectly browned toast.
- The ideal thickness for a slice of French toast is 3/4-inch to 1-inch thick.
- Be sure to let the bread soak in the egg mixture for several minutes. Soaking the bread for a while ensures that it comes out custardy and delicious after frying.
- If you’re making a large batch of french toast, it’s a good idea to use a large electric skillet, griddle, or pan so you don’t have to go through too many batches.
- Use a fish spatula for flipping and removing french toast. It’s thin and slotted making it perfect to slide under the toast without picking up too much of the grease.
- Pre-heat your skillet/griddle to medium heat before frying the egg-soaked bread. Cook three to four minutes per side.
- If you’ve never made french toast with bacon grease – trust me, you’ll wonder why you never cooked it that was before!
- Wipe down the pan between batches and reapply the grease/butter. This way you’ll avoid coating your toast or bananas in burnt butter!
How To Store And Reheat Bananas Foster French Toast
How long will this caramel banana french toast stay fresh?
Let me preface this by saying we seldom have leftovers in my house when I make bananas foster french toast for breakfast! But if you do, you can keep the extra slices in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Keep the topping in another container. It’ll also last about 3 days.
When you’re ready to serve the french toast, you can reheat it in the microwave, toaster oven, or in the oven at a low temperature. Enjoy!
Recipe Variations
- For added texture, consider tossing some chopped pecans or walnuts on top! I add walnuts to mine sometimes, and it reminds me of having banana bread. It’s an easy and tasty way to add some crunch to this french toast!
- Sprinkle with mini chocolate chips.
- Swap the vanilla extract for almond extract.
- Bananas Foster usually includes rum. If you’d like to make this french toast extra special, add a little rum to the bananas after the sugar has dissolved in the butter.
- Want some more sweetness on top? A drizzle of honey makes a stack of this french toast truly to die for. The combination of honey, caramelized bananas, and a dash of cinnamon is unbelievably good! Any honey will do, but the darker honey typically has a richer flavor that best compliments this decadent dish.

Instructions
- To make the French toast, preheat an oven to 250°F.
- In a large, shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, orange juice, sugar, vanilla, and salt. Soak the bread in the egg mixture until saturated (about 5 minutes). You may need to do this in batches.
- Place a large skillet over medium heat until hot. Add bacon grease (or butter) to the skillet to melt.
- Remove the bread from the egg mixture, let the excess liquid drip back into the bowl, and place bread on the hot skillet. Cook until the bottoms are golden brown, about 2- 4 minutes on each side. Place the toast on a baking sheet and transfer to the oven to keep warm.
- Wipe out the skillet with a paper towel and add the butter and brown sugar and cook over medium-high heat until caramelized. Add bananas in a thin layer. Allow to bubble a bit, use a wooden spoon to stir and cover the banana slices in caramel sauce. Cook until bananas are lightly brown (2-3 minutes). Sprinkle with cinnamon.
- Serve the French Toast piping hot, topped with spoonfuls of the bananas foster.
- Garnish with whipped cream, optional, but highly recommended!
Notes
you can use butter in place of bacon grease for frying the french toast, but I recommend the bacon grease.

I adore french toast. I am always torn between getting french toast or pancakes and don’t want to miss out on either. I, too, keep bacon fat in the freezer…but I never think to use it…shame! I’ll have to see what states have The Pancake House. We’re heading out on a road trip and the pancakes at The Cracker Barrel were so heavy and oily that last trip.

I always cook eggs in bacon grease, but instead of storing it I simply cook the bacon in a pan, drain most of the grease and then fry up the eggs in what is left.
These look amazing!

The recipe called for preheating the oven to 250 degrees- not sure why? The oven was never referenced again in the recipe.
It’s in step 4 (to keep the french toast warm if you’re cooking in batches).
THE RECIPE STATES: Place the toast on a baking sheet and transfer to the oven to keep warm.
So good! Turned out perfect! Thank you so much.
Used leftover french bread, had a couple bananas, had some heavy whipping cream, i mean, i HAD to make this, right? it all came together beautifully. I topped it with whipped cream made with almond extract.
