Over the last few weeks we have been talking “laundry“. I also have another $25 Visa card to giveaway……so keep reading.
I asked if you are a laundry lover or hater? I also asked what you look for in a laundry detergent.
I learned:
- Most of us don’t like doing laundry, but know it HAS to be done.
[pullquote]Laundry is my nemesis. It seems to multiply and just when I think it is complete it comes back. I, honestly, do not know where it comes from, because most of it is not mine. ~Ellen J[/pullquote]
- There are some, though, that actually ENJOY doing laundry
- Many of us hate putting the laundry away
- Some of us lucky ones have husbands or children who help with the laundry, making the task easier.
[pullquote]Do I dare admit that my husband does the laundry probably more often than I do? It was one of those things I taught him how to do early on . No, I will not share him. ~Shaina[/pullquote]
- Doing a load or two every day, is the best way to keep it under control.
What do we look for in a laundry detergent?
- Cost and Scent were tied for the two biggest factors when choosing a laundry detergent
[pullquote]What do I look for in detergent? Cost is a definite factor, scent (sometimes we get the fragrance-free…don’t want to compete too much with my perfume ), and of course, I want it to work. ~ Bridget [/pullquote]
- Stain fighting and cleaning action were next on the list
- Color safe and skin irritants were also important
I have been using Arm & Hammer Plus OxiClean Power Gel Laundry Detergent, which includes not only Arm & Hammer Baking Soda (duh!) but also OxiClean to tackle tough stains. I have to honestly say…………I’m in love with it! And I can’t tell you how many times my 14 year old has told me how GREAT it smells when she’s doing laundry. I mean seriously, who knew a 14 year old even CARED what the laundry smells like! lol
Steps to successful Laundry
via Arm & Hammer
- Sort it Out:
Proper laundry sorting is important to prevent laundry problems like dye transfers and shrinking clothes. Read and follow care labels.
- Colorfastness:
If uncertain whether the garment dyes are colorfast, find a hidden area of the garment (such as, the inside seam) and apply a “Pre-treatment concentration” of detergent. Allow to sit for 30 minutes and rinse. If color remains fast, proceed on whole garment.
- Pre-treatments:
Treat stains early. Fresh stains are easier to remove than old ones. Always test an inside seam for colorfastness.
- Drying:
Do not put garments with a stain in dryer. The dryer heat will set stains and make them permanent. Repeat pre-treatment/washing techniques above. If this doesn’t work, send garment to cleaners. Some stains, however, may be permanent.

my favorite tip: try to get somebody else to do it.
I find it helpful to have a separate basket for each type of laundry. One for whites, one for darks, and one for wet towels. I also keep a bottle of stain remover near the baskets so I can pre-treat before I throw it in.
I like using white vinegar as fabric softener!
I use Arm & Hammer Free & Clear laundry powder and think it’s great and gentle enough to use for even the babies clothes! Their laundry powder is great for our fragrance sensitive family. Thanks for the chance at this giveaway!
Laundry tip.. Sorting and Organizing are motivating factors.. If i dont feel like doing laundry that MINUTE.. I sort and organize.. I have about 10 baskets.. Then I come back to it when its time, and it doesnt seem that bad.. I throw in a load, and its already sorted .. (colors/whites/towels)…
If my laundry area is organized, there’s a better chance that its gonna get done.. MESSY areas = unmotivation for this Momma!
I keep a stain stick in EACH laundry hamper. My family pre-treats any stains as they dis-robe.
I wash in cold water and dry on low heat. I also bought quick drying towels.

My world drastically changed when I figured out I don’t have to wash everything all in one day. I try to do one load a day, and it never turns into a mountain that I can’t overcome.

To get the “sour” smell out of towels, pour some vinegar in with your load.
Doing a load a day keeps the mountain of laundry away! 🙂
Oxy Clean (powder) and Cascade Dish shop. Us chefs swear by it to get our whites whiter!

I always do my laundry after seven in the evening and never run the washer & dryer together because it uses too much electricity. By dong this I save about twenty dollars a month on my electricity bill.

The best tip… teach your kids how to do laundry by having the right tools for the job. Different basket for sorting, good detergent, show them how to use the washer and dryer and last but not least, when in doubt, ask.
best regards,
Wanda
I have a large household so I wash two loads everyday and get it put away. And I treat those stains immediately. A stain remover for my laundry I never thought I’d use is Fantastik’s Oxy Power. I have little children who love permanent markers and this has been a lifesaver. I wash before 7am (closer to 5am) and after 7pm to save on electricity.
Ever since I got a laundry sorter, i don’t mind doing laundry. The best thing to do is wash, dry and fold and put away right away. I don’t hardly ever have to iron either as I hang up the dress clothes right form the dryer.
I’d rather “keep up” than “catch up”!! I try to do laundry twice a week for my husband and myself!!
My favorite tip: Wash and dry all the laundry one day. Leave the clothes in their baskets, clean. Put it all away the next day. I found that if I tried to wash, dry, and put away in the same day I would be consumed and stressed. Sharing it over 2 days ensures that I don’t bite off more than I can chew!
I’m sure everyone knows this already, but make sure to never use fabric softener on towels. Apparently it decreases their absorptive power somehow.

I’m also a FB fan already.
My ancient Chinese secret is using a little distilled vinegar! It especially helps when little kiddies have accidents on sheets or clothes…takes the urine smell away! It also really helps with kitchen towels that have that stale water smell and with clothes that you forget to take out of the washer promptly!
I have 3 baskets in my laundry room. The kids each have a basket in their rooms. Each morning as part of their chores (they are ages 15, 11, and 8) they bring their baskets to the laundry room and sort their dirty clothes into the 3 baskets (darks, towels and underwear, and whites). They leave their baskets in the laundry room and when their clothes are clean, I fold them and put them neatly back into their baskets. Then I let them know when their baskets are ready for pick up and they take them back to their rooms and put them away. Works for us. 🙂
that should read ages 15,11, and 8
I have my family tie any article of clothing that needs attention into a knot- that’s my signal to look it over before washing. Already a FB fan!!
Love that idea!

Once you finish a load in the dryer put another one in right away to help lower energy costs.

Hi, I started doing laundry awhile ago, mom was a busy mother of eight.
So she taught me with the wringer washer back then, whites first, then colours then darks. Well fast forward to 2009 and I’m thinking, why am I still doing whites first!!!! Dumb, dumb……no longer need to do that as the washing machine does whatever load you want to do first!!! Never too old to learn something new!! 🙂
I do remember how wringer washer and put rubber diapers through that wringer diapers and explodes and I ruined a couple of shirts
Did you ever get anything caught in a wringer?or ruined a couple of shirts?
Try to do a couple of loads everyday. Give each child their own laundry basket too.
I’ve never tried Arm and Hammer brand laundry detergent before. I might give it a try when it’s time to get a new gallon of detergent. My laundry tips is in the laundry basket itself. 🙂 There are 3 “slots” in my laundry basket, one for white, one for color, and one for black/dark color clothes. So, when a piece of clothing needs to go into the basket, I make sure everyone in the family knows which slot to place so it saves me time in sorting colors right before the laundry.

Oldest daughter brings the laundry down and sorts it every night, then starts one load-whatever there is most of. I put it in dryer as soon as I wake up, then fold it while I do another activity – overseeing my kids practicing their instruments or watching TV later in evening. When my oldest went to college last fall, she was surprised to find she was the laundry expert in the dorm, and taught several friends how to sort & wash! Now 12-yr old daughter has taken over. It really doesn’t seem like a chore because it is a small part of our daily routine.
I also try to wash at least 1 – 2 loads a day, and it doesn’t pile up to where you have a whole “mountain” of dirty laundry!!!!! I also wash our “good” clothes on a delicate cycle, and hang them to dry….. clothes stay new looking a lot longer.

My favorite tip is to never let the clean clothes pile up. Fold or hang and put away as soon as possible each load.
