Family traditions are one of my favorite things about the holidays. It’s so special to have meaningful things that we do as a family year after year. When our girls were younger, my mom would give them an ornament each year and we would put their name on it. They get so excited when we put the tree up, to dig thru our ornament box and reminisce about each one. When Heather moved to her own place, she took all of “her” ornaments with her, so it made her new tree feel a little like home.
When it is time to put the tree up, they each place their ornaments where they want on the tree………I may be known to go around and “fix them” a little later 😉
For some reason, we don’t have many “family” ornaments. We have the “Our First Christmas Ornament” that is 27 years old and still standing!!! I love the idea of having a special ornament to represent our whole family though. This year I’m starting a new tradition! I want FAMILY ornaments……..that way when our last one goes and we have an empty nest, we don’t have an empty tree!

We have a couple of family traditions that even my 19 year son still enjoys. We watch “It’s A Wonderful Life” & “Polar Express” with hot chocolate. This past year we invited his girlfriend to watch which she thoroughly enjoyed. The other is we always make rolled out sugar cookies. I started this when my daughter was a little girl and continue even now that she has her own brand new baby girl!
One of my family’s favorite Christmas tradition is to gather Christmas Eve night with my brother and sister and their families. We eat and open presents from one another. It is loud and fun!!
A few traditions we have for christmas is watch polar express and have cocoa Christmas Eve then kids play until midnight then we all pass out gifts and open them. Go to sleep and see what Santa brings in the morning
We spend Christmas Day each year at my Aunt’s house. She lives in a 3 story turn-of-the-century mansion in a small town. It is very beautiful and we look forward to the special day there every year!
I made each of my boys Christmas ornaments every year and gave them to them the first Christmas they were married. Saving their first Christmas ornament for me. 🙂
As a newly single mother of two, I’m trying to “make” some traditions this year. I saw a great idea of a present with christmas jammies, a movie, and popcorn. I am going to do that this year!

We always make Monkey Bread on Christmas Eve!
Our four kids and 8 almost 9 grandkids get together on Christmas Eve and have dinner together. Then we all open gifts from each other, so the families can be together Christmas morning to see what Santa brought them.
all of my family and my husbands family comes to my house for lunch and to swap gifts. it’s a busy day, but so much fun!
We celebrate Christmas Eve with an hors d’oeuvres buffet!
We have a few Christmas traditions at our house. Xmas eve we all snuggle together in the “big bed” as my kids say (we have a king size bed) though it is getting a little tight as the kids are getting older, but we don our Santa hats and new pj’s that the elves left on the front porch (my husband dresses as an elf and goes outside with a flashlight and wanders around, the kids flip) this is the sign that we must go to bed, we read the night before xmas. I also do photo ornaments one for each child highlighting events throughout the year and a family one for my husband and I. We love looking at the past years as we put them on the tree and the kids love hearing about the stories.
This is my daughter’s first Christmas, so we are going to start some traditions this year!
We have a few holiday traditions. My sister and I always try to do Christmas as early as possible like when we were little kids even though we are 28 and 23 now. So I come over at 6 or 7 and we jump on our parent’s bed and wake them up. Then we all stay in our pj’s and dad always asks the same exact question every Christmas…”anyone want breakfast first?” Which we always say NO really loud. We then set up the video camera and dad sits by the presents and divides them up into piles of who’s presents are who’s. He then starts with my sister who is the youngest and we go around one at a time opening presents and we all watch as each person opens presents. Mom takes pictures of the person with their present after they have opened it and we have all seen it and commented on it. If help is needed opening the plastic or so forth on it once the wrapping and all is opened, dad helps with that. We go around until they are all gone. The best ones are saved for last. The stockings come first. We then talk about our presents and how thankful we are for them. Then dad makes breakfast….always scrambled egg sandwiches for dad, mom and myself and my sister varies since she is a vegetarian. We then eat breakfast and play with or try on or put batteries in and try out our new presents. Then we hang out and spend time together. Then we get ready and in the late afternoon we go to my grandmother’s for our Christmas with my mom’s mom and dad and her brother, wife and kids and eat dinner. It is a wonderful day and we enjoy spending time together and laughing and having fun no matter how many presents there are. It isn’t about gifts, it is about being together and love.
Lots of traditions… church services (Advent services, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day)… driving around looking at lights, decorating the house, baking cookies…
we make candy trains and try to do a Christ centered devotional at night.
After church on Christmas Eve the entire family gathers at my Nana and Papa’s. All of us cousins receive new pajamas from our parents. After 25 years of this we “children” decided to return the gift, so now our parents also receive new, matching pajamas too!
Holiday tradition: we bake a birthday cake and eat it Christmas morning to remember to truly celebrate Jesus’ birthday!
On Christmas eve, we go to the candlelight service together as a family. Then we come home get our pjs on and let the kids open one present. Then, we read the Christmas story of our Saviour’s birth.
We have a Christmas Eve tradition, since our 7 year old was born 🙂 She gets to open one present every Christmas Eve, and it’s always a set of new PJ’s. In the past 6 years, it was always Christmas PJ’s. Now this year we’ve moved from that, to One Direction PJ’s 😉 But she will open them, change into them, and we all have hot chocolate together and listen to Christmas music. I love it.
we don’t usually put any presents out until Christmas eve – it helps the focus to be off of presents and more on Jesus’ birthday 🙂
My boys love their new Christmas PJ.s and they look so happy and sweet in them!
We always go to Grandma’s for Christmas Eve dinner and gift-opening, followed (hopefully) by “midnight” church service.
We cut down Christmas trees the day after Thanksgiving, decorate gingerbread houses at a local church, make sugar cookies, do a grab bag gift exchange….a busy, family-filled wonderful time of year 🙂
As a kid I always loved our tradition of opening 1 present on Christmas Eve after church. Now that I have kids of my own they look forward to that tradition… It’s also a good incentive for good behavior! 🙂
My children and I bake and decorate Christmas cookies every year.
We all try to get together the weekend between Christmas and New Year’s as we are all spread out across the Midwest. We play a “Naughty Santa” gift exchange game and have fun stealing and yelling and just having a great time!
Our family traditions include purchasing a new personalized ornament each year with our name(s) and the year on it for every Christmas and Advent as a family.
One of my family’s favorite traditions is riding around town together and looking at all the Christmas lights on Christmas Eve while wearing our pjs and sipping hot cocoa.
I took it upon myself to start a tradition for my young nieces and nephews. Starting the first Thanksgiving after they were born, they each receive a new Christmas themed book to read (or due to their ages, to have the parents read to them) I look at it as building their very own Christmas library that will be fun to look back at years from now and see the variety of books they will have. Who knows maybe one day they will be able to read the same books to their own kids.
One of our favorite traditions is to attend a local performance of the Messiah. Thanks for the opportunity!

We celebrate Christmas at Great Grandma House. everyone bring a dish, we sing carols, open presents, play some games!
Things have changed so much in the last 15 years divorced, both sons married, 3 grandkids, different house, different guy…things change so much I wish I did have some traditions. I get my boys Budweiser Christmas steins every year. Miss those I’ve lost.
We adopted our boys 8 years ago. We met them on Thanksgiving and we brought them home on Christmas Eve 8 years ago this year. Our Holidays are very sweet ad emotional! One Christmas tradition we have done for the last 7 years is the gift scavenger hunt. We start with the first hint in their Christmas Stockings. We give them a clue to where their first gift is and they go find it. They get the gifts, bring them back to the living room where they open it in front of us and find the next clue, go find that and bring it back, etc, leading up to their biggest and best gift. It slows them down so the Christmas gifts are done in a flurry and they have to acknowledge who gave them the gift. And they LOVE it. They are now 16 & 17 and every year they ask, “Are we going to do the scavenger hunt this year!?” And, they’ve already asked if we are doing it this year. Didn’t know we were starting a tradition when we did it…but we did!
We used to go to my dad’s house Christmas day, but now that we have an almost 3 year old and another boy due next week, we’ve started a new tradition. All are welcome at our house to celebrate, that way my boys can stay home in their jammies and play, and family can pop in for a visit any time of the day.
This Christmas is my son’s second christmas but his first understanding! (Last year he was 2 months old and slept through everything!) We are looking foward to starting many family traditions with him! He loves looking at our tree and taking off his jingle bell ornaments and shaking them! I can’t wait to take him out to look at lights! It’s a magical time of year especially through the eyes of a little one experiencing it for the fisrt time!
Every year we do a Secret Santa swap, since our family is so big. It’s fun sitting around opening gifts, trying to figure out who had each other. There’s always lots of food, laughter and creating memories for everyone there.
We always go to my mother in laws for Christmas coffee and to open stockings on Christmas Eve!
We go to church on Christmas Eve.
My kids get new pajamas on Christmas Eve. I started it when my oldest was 1 yr old. They are now 23, 19 and 15. They still get just as excited on Christmas Eve to open a present early, even though they know what it is. :o)
