Recipe FAQs

What is a cherry crumble made of?

A cherry crumble is a dessert that’s made with a base of sweet yet tart cherries, topped with a crumbly topping made with flour, sugar, oats, and butter, and then baked.

Can I use fresh cherries instead of canned cherry pie filling for a cherry crumble?

You can absolutely use fresh cherries! If it’s cherry season where you live, just grab them from the produce section and all you need to do is use a cherry pitter to pit them before slicing the cherries, then thicken them by cooking them with some sugar and a cornstarch slurry.

Variations or Additions

  • Fruit Filling – Swap out the cherry pie filling for other fresh fruit. Use summer fruits like blueberry or strawberry or try apple filling in the fall. You can also make your own homemade cherry pie filling.
  • Ice Cream – While a simple scoop of vanilla ice cream pairs well, you can also use your own favorite flavor to go with the crumble.
  • Flour – Use a gluten-free 1:1 alternative or almond flour to replace the all-purpose flour for a gluten-free crumble.
  • Lemon Juice – Add a little bit of citrus to brighten the crumble.
  • Extract – Splash in some vanilla extract for an amazing aroma or almond extract for nuttiness.
  • Pie – Use a pre-made pie crust for a base and top with the crumble mixture to make a cherry crumb pie.

Once you try this Easy Cherry Crumble, you’ll want to make it again and again. It’s a sweet, simple treat that always hits the spot and makes any meal special!
