I’m SO excited to have cookie guru Bridget of the blog Bake at 350 and author of Decorating Cookies, here to share tips on how to freeze cookies for Holiday baking.
So, grab a cookie and come along………….
Hi, TidyMom readers! I am so thrilled to be here guest posting today on one of my favorite blogs! Thank you, Cheryl, for the invite!
Well, ladies…the season is upon us. The baking season, that is. I love baking and decorating cookies, but sometimes just the thought of how many I have to bake…for teachers, neighbors, friends, relatives…in December makes me tired.
Guess what? You can FREEZE sugar cookies and save them for later! Yay!
Here’s how I do it:
-
- Bake the cookies and let them cool completely,
- Stack in gallon freezer baggies between layers of wax paper,
- Place the baggies in freezer safe plastic containers (this gives them an extra layer of protection and keeps them from getting crushed).
.
To thaw, just take them out of the freezer about 3 hours or more before decorating. (Do not refrigerate.)
Cookies already decorated with royal icing can also be frozen! This is great if you’re planning a big party, just make your cookies in advance and pop in the freezer. Again, take them out a few hours before you need them, and you are all set. If you’ve bagged them, leave the cookies in the bags to thaw.
Happy cookie decorating!
Thanks again Bridget!! Your cookies inspire me every day! You make it all look so easy with your “I can do it” attitude and all of the advice you share! I can’t wait until we can actually meet in person one day!

Oh, me too! Wouldn't that me fun?!? Thanks again for the invite to guest post…so thrilled to be here. 🙂
Great tips! I'm looking forward to getting started on holiday baking… but not looking forward to the taste testing. Still on sugar overload from Halloween!!
What about freezing cookie dough? I've done this before & it seems to work alright. I'm just wondering if you have any tips or suggestions. Thanks!
Those cookies look amazing! What a wonderful idea to do the baking ahead of time! So where do we learn to decorate them like that?!?! 🙂

Lorie…I've never just frozen the dough. If I'm making cookies, I always just go ahead and cut them out while the kitchen is covered in flour! 😉
If I were to try to freeze the dough, I'd roll it first, then stack the rolled out dough between sheets of waxed paper or parchment, then I'd put that in a freezer container.
It you try it, pls let me know how it worked!

Here's what I found online about freezing cookie dough (I may write a new post about this soon)
Cookie dough that has been double wrapped and frozen in a airtight container should easily last 3 months in most residential freezers.

Great Post. Love your beautiful cookie art, but unfortunately don't have the patience for it! I much prefer to bake and eat simple homestyle cookies. Most cookie doughs, including sugar cookie dough, freeze beautifully. You can roll the dough into logs for slice and bake cookies, roll them into balls for quick and easy drop cookies or freeze the dough in flat disks that can be thawed and rolled out for cut out cookies. I think freezing the dough is preferable to freezing the cookies since they taste fresher.

YAY! Thanks for sharing this tip. I had planned on a marathon cookie baking session sometime this month. This took some of the pressure off my timeframe!
So Yum!
How long can I keep the baked cookies in the freezer? Same question for the frosted cookies. Thanks!
I love this !!!! I have been looking for away to freeze cookies with out compromising the taste and being able to decorate.
Awesome thanks again.
How long will the cookies last in the freezer?
How long can the baked cookies stay in the freezer?
Hello! I know this post this post is older, but I had a question. Once you have thawed the cookies, are they still the same texture as they were before you froze them?
yes, they will taste just as good as fresh
Hello, for how long can i keep the baked cookies in the freezeer and for how long the decorated ones with royal icing?
at least 2-3 months.
I froze some cookies for my son’s school holiday party that is at 8:40 in the morning. Can I thaw these the night before? Or is it better to wake up super early to put these out to thaw? Thanks!
