Earth Day Cookies and Picnic for the Planet

Earth Day is about celebrating the planet that we live on, it’s a time to focus on building a clean, healthy, diverse world for today and future generations.
Our planet does a lot for us, we should take it out for lunch.
So grab a blanket, a basket of food and head to your favorite park or outdoor spot and help the Nature Conservancy set a world record with the largest picnic celebration!
I made Earth Day cookies! Heather is a stylist at an Aveda salon, and they are celebrating Earth Month as well, so she asked if I could make some cookies for the salon.

To Make Earth Day Cookies
Supplies Needed
- 4″ round cookie cutter (I also used a scalloped square cookie cutter)
- Vanilla Almond Butter Cookie Dough
- Royal Icing tinted with AmeriColor Sky Blue, Leaf Green, and Bright White
- disposable icing bags
- couplers and tips: #1.5 or #2 (for writing) #5 (for smiley face)
- squeeze bottles
I RECOMMEND FOR MAKING EARTH DAY COOKIES:
To make Globe Cookies:
- using 4″ round cookies
- blue icing (using Callye’s 20-second rule for the consistency) in squeeze bottle
- green icing (consistency 20-second rule) in squeeze bottle
- white icing, piping consistency, in decorator bag with coupler and #1.5 (or #2) tip
Flood entire cookie with blue icing, then use green to make continents (no need to be exact, you just want the effect)
If you want to write on the cookies, let them dry a few hours before writing “Earth Day”
To make Smiley Face Cookies
- blue and green icing (using Callye’s 20-second rule for the consistency) in squeeze bottle
- blue and green icing, piping consistency, in icing bags with coupler and #5 tip
Flood entire cookie in either blue or green. Let dry about an hour, then pipe opposite color for eyes and mouth.
To make square cookies
Follow same instructions as above, using square cookie cutter.

On and around April 22, The Nature Conservancy will encourage people all around the world to celebrate the planet we live on by stepping outside and enjoying good food with great company.
In 2011, the inaugural Picnic for the Planet was a great success with thousands of people joining more than 600 picnics in 61 countries on all seven continents. We even held our own virtual picnic on many of our blogs.
2012: Bigger and Better!
For Earth Day 2012 (April 22), The Nature Conservancy will once again ask people to get outside and join the world’s largest picnic celebration. And this year we are going to make it official: we will attempt to set the world record for the most people picnicking in a 24-hour period. Web visitors can either browse the Conservancy-sponsored picnic events around the world, including in cities like Seattle, Boston and Melbourne, Australia, or sign up to host a picnic with family and friends. Anyone who holds a Picnic for the Planet with at least 25 people can download the materials to be officially included in the record-breaking attempt.
Please join me and a group of friends and fellow bloggers in celebrating Earth Day this year by having a picnic for the planet. What better way to celebrate the Earth Day than with a picnic?

We are big recyclers (at home and work), we also use reusable lunch containers, cloth grocery bags, and use energy saving items in our home as well (energy efficient appliances, lightbulbs, low flow toilets and shower heads, etc.)
I was packing my lunch for work this morning and it occurred to me HOW MUCH of those plastic sandwhich bags I go through. Instead of throwing all this plastic away I want to get some re-usable. Much more earth friendly!
I have given up paper towels and am using cloth towels. I am also cutting down my use of plastic bags and recycling those that i do use.

I am a licensed childcare provider, and one of the “rules” we must follow is using a single use towel for handwashing vs. using a handtowel that stays on the counter. A lot of providers use paper towels since they can just be tossed in the garbage. INSTEAD I bought bulk packages of cheap washcloths so each time a child washes their hands they dry them with a washcloth, then toss them in a small basket I keep on the floor. We do A LOT of handwashing here, so this has helped save a lot of space in my trash can as well as $$$! In the kitchen we also use old baby washcloths (the smaller, thin ones) for washing up after meals. Then at the end of the day, everything just goes in the laundry! I normally just have kiddos every other day so I can sometimes get away with doing laundry just every other day as well.

I recycle everything! I even have separate bins for paper, plastic and metal. And of course, travel mugs, recyclable bags, washcloths instead of paper towels… I’m also very big on saving water, and reusing gift bags and wrappers.

We are an active family in being more green living for our
environment! We keep the water heater turned down and
keep a timer in the shower. Also, we make one trip to
do errands as much as possible…We also walk to the
stores, instead of driving, whenever possible!
Also, we recycle as much as we can.

I stopped using name-brand cleaners and re-used the plastic bottles I had and made my own house-hold cleaner. Not only does my furniture and countertops looks and smell better, I can tell our health has taken a drastic turn also. Saving money this way too!

These cookies are beyond adorable, Cheryl! What a fun way to get kids excited about Earth Day.
Reusable everything (even napkins) for our 3 girls school lunches. It make for lots of dishes but not a lot of waste.
Cute cookies! I started using home made cold process soap with no detergents to harm the environment.
Gotten away from plastic bags in kids lunches, have switched to reusable washable container. Stopped buying bottled water and use our thermos now too! We are trying!

I use reusable bags for my groceries, recycle soda cans, don’t litter and overall just try to watch what I do and teach.
We are much better at recycling than we used to be. I feel really guilty if anything goes in the trash by mistake!

We don’t get plastic bags at stores anymore – we carry around reusable ones. I have other plans too and as soon as my husband finds a job I’ll put them into play!

Our family recycles, we take steps to limit our water and electricity usage, we purchased energy star appliances, and we support products made with recycled materials.
We started composting our kitchen scraps last year and this year we expanded our garden!

I try not to use styrafoam, I wash and reuse foil and most plastic ziploc bags. I also use white toilet paper and papertowels and use my paper towels sparingly.
We have 3 recycle bins and we fill them all up weekly and set them out every Monday morning for the recycle people to pick up.

We recycle everything we can, and greatly cut down our use of paper towels, napkins, plastic bags, and bottles. We use refillable bottles for water rather than the plastic water bottles.

We work very hard to turn off lights, limit electricity and water usage and recycle and reuse as much as possible!
A couple of things is I started recycle my trash, no more paper plates, and I got me some water bottles to stop the plastic bottle waste.
