DIY Color Block Tray
Whether you’re hosting a party, having a friend over for coffee, or just gathering the family around the TV, a serving tray can makes it so easy to move food and drink around. Today I’m going to teach you how to make a colorful DIY Color Block Tray. This tray isn’t just for entertaining, it would also be a great addition to add a pop of color to any space. The color blocking gives the tray a modern look while the touch of gold adds a touch of elegance!
I don’t know about you, but my family loves to snack while we watch TV. With over 6,000 hours of athletic competition programming crammed into most of August this year, along with Major League Baseball, every evening has been filled watching swimming, gymnastics, volleyball, baseball and more.
So when my friends at DIGIORNO asked if I could share how my family likes to rise to any occasion and enjoy family time around the TV watching the big summer competitions and games, I thought it was the perfect time to share the DIY Color Block Tray I made for serving DIGIORNO pizzeria! thin pizza and other snacks.

Total cost was under $20! And took only a few hours to make. Hands-on time was way less, most of the time was spent waiting for paint to dry.
SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR DIY COLOR BLOCK TRAY
- 18-inch unfinished pine wood round
- 2 cabinet drawer pulls with screws
- acrylic paint (I used 3 colors; navy blue, white and gold)
- spray paint for pulls (optional)
- sealer (I used a water-based sealer, like glue)
- sponge brushes
- painters tape
Since I was using gold as one of my colors, I wanted my handles to be gold as well. So my first step was to spray paint the pulls in a gold metallic spray paint. This step is optional and only needed if you want to change the color of your pulls.
Next, I recommend painting the edge of the board one color, I choose white. Give it two coats and let it dry.
Since I designed my DIY color block tray with three colors, you have to work on one color section at a time. To begin, use a piece of painters tape to mark off the section for your first color (I used white first).
Using a sponge brush, apply the first color of paint. Try to brush in the direction of the wood for a more natural and clean look. You will need to allow each coat of paint to dry completely then apply another coat. I applied about 2-3 coats. Allow the last coat to dry, then carefully remove the tape.
To continue, make sure the first color is completely dry and lay a new piece of painters tape over the edge of the first color, and position another piece of tape to section off for your second color.
Repeat the steps for applying 2-3 coats of paint, remove the tape once the paint is dry, and continue the process for the third color. Remember to be patient, and make sure each color is completely dry before taping off for the next color.
Once you have applied all three colors for the color block, you will want to seal the paint to protect it. I used decoupage to seal.
For the final step, use a pencil to mark where you want your handles, pre-drill the screw holes, attach the handles with the screws and your DIY Color Block Tray is complete!
*note: the tray is not food safe, food should NOT be placed directly on tray. Use a barrier between food and tray, such as a plate, bowl or dollies.
Now all you need is your favorite treats and you’re ready to cheer on your favorite athletes. I don’t know about you, but watching the family members in the stands is almost as entertaining as the competitions!
Just like the athletes, DIGIORNO pizzeria! thin is a one-of-a-kind! A pizza that makes your mouth water and your senses celebrate, freshly baked right from your own oven in 20 minutes.
