See how I turned our small guest room into an amethyst bedroom worthy of a high-end hotel. With touches of copper and gold, IKEA shelves and West Elm bedding.
When we moved to this house last year, one of the things I was most excited about was we would finally have a guest room!! Most of our family lives close by, so we’ve really never had a need for one, but I do love having the extra room when an out of town friend comes to visit or a guest decides to spend the night. And I’ll be honest……having another bedroom to decorate is fun too!
I don’t have any before pictures to show you, because it’s one of those projects that happened with out any real planning, and I still have a little more to do, but I wanted to share the progress with you!
It’s a small room, so it does have it’s challenges.
It all started when we upgraded the old hand-me-down mattress to a ComforPedic IQ™from Beautyrest mattress. It’s high-tech with Smart Response™ Technology offering personalized support by naturally responding to your body’s individual weight and sleeping position throughout the night (without any motors or electronics) plus it has Ultra Cool™ Memory Foam keeping it nice and cool. Only the best for our guests 😉
By intuitively adapting to your every move during the night, this mattress not only ensures that you get your best sleep at night, but also provides continued positive results after you get out of bed and start your day. —-they may never want to leave!
Our old bed was a full size, and the new ComforPedic IQ™ is a queen size bed……..so you know what that means?! New bedding!
The minute I walked into West Elm, I feel in love with the Amethyst Organic Diamond Medallion Matelasse Duvet Cover and Organic Ikat Stripe Sheet Set . They looked perfect layered with a Lexington Coverlet in Pearl for a little extra warmth.

Silk Hand-Loomed Pillow Cover – Dark Iris and floral cover both from West Elm
White Faux Fur Pillow (similar), here is the one I got in grey both from WayFair

Faux Fur Rug from Ikea
Floral Canvas from HomeGoods
Since the room is so small I was having a really hard time figuring out what to do about a night stand. So I decided to skip one all together and install open shelves on the wall next to the closet and bed, with the lowest shelf set up to use as a night stand! Ikea EKBY JÄRPEN/ EKBY BJÄRNUM worked perfectly and best of all – they are only $15 a piece! I love how it turned out.
The bed is only about 15 inches from the wall, so we placed the lowest self about 8 inches higher than the bed, making a perfect spot for a small lamp, bowl for jewelry and shelf space and an outlet below for cell phone too! I filled the other shelves mostly with things I had around the house.
I was walking thru the plumbing department at Lowes one day when I spied these copper plumbing fittings that would look awesome with the air plants I had picked up at our local nursery. No soil is needed, and they thrive on neglect! so I just dropped them in the copper fittings and I take them out to mist with a little water every week or two.
The bankers lamp and gold bowl are both from Target. All of the other items I’ve had for a while.
What’s left to do?
Paint – I originally thought I wanted to paint the room a creamy white, but now that the room is done, I don’t really mind the beige color that was already on the walls. The sun kept going in and out the day I took these pictures, so that’s why some of these pictures look more yellow than others. It definitely needs fresh paint. I would love opinions on color. I already have a lot of Benjamin Moore Covington Gray in the house. I love it in our family room and hall ways but I’d like to do something other than grey again.
Dresser – I’m on the hunt for a narrow dresser that wont take up a lot of space, but give a little bit of storage.
Art work for the other walls.
Window – I put up IKEA Vivan curtains that were just $10 a pair!! I love how light and airy they are, but I need to get a shade or blinds for a little privacy when needed.
This was such a fun room to work on! I wanted to make it feel feminine with out being too “girly” I must have done a good job………because my husband seems to have no problem sleeping in there some nights. He claims someone is snoring in our room (I’m SURE it’s the dog lol) and he’s loving the new mattress and bedding. He said it feels like he’s staying in a high end hotel! So I guess that means it’s guest ready!!……..who wants to be first?
Disclaimer: I have a working relationship with Beautyrest, who sent me the most comfortable mattress for our guests to sleep on! As always, all views and opinions are my own.

Love it! Looks comfortable…and serene…like a haven. I would stay there. Funny that your husband likes it! I am sure it is the dog or maybe your husband who is snoring himself awake. I love the shelves…great idea.
Thanks so much Karen!
Booking my flight! 😉
It looks really beautiful, Cheryl! I love those shelves…and I want to lie down on that mattress!
it’s all ready for you to come visit again! 😉
My daughter is in need of a new mattress. I’ll go check out the ComforPedic for her. I love the little shelves you added for a nightstand and need to pick up some air plants for my guest room.
everyone who sleeps on the bed falls in love with it!! – the air plants are so cool aren’t they? — see you in a few days!!!
What a beautiful bedroom!! I loooove the color and the decor. It’s gorgeous!
Thanks so much Katerina!!
That is sooo beautiful… Pat yourself on the back Good Job!! I love it!!!!! Big wow in my book :))))
Thanks so much Melissa!
Lovely room, Cheryl! A guests dream… xo
Thanks so much Kelly – everyone keeps going in there to sleep on that bed! lol
The room is beautiful! But I have never liked beds on the small wall of a bedroom due to the difficulty with making the bed. Also, it makes the room seem smaller to have the bed in a corner. Is the long wall from the door to the window not workable? If it’s just blank, I would put the bed on it, a little closer to the window than the door wall to make a more spacious entry to the room. Then you could have an end table and lamp on either side or at least on the window side. The shelves would still look lovely where they are or you could put them above a small chest/dresser/console or move that whole arrangement to the wall the bed is on now. If the closet has a single door that won’t work with this arrangement, you could install the narrow double doors and have enough room to open them. Beautiful color scheme, though, and I love the copper touches.
Thanks so much Donna – this is the only wall the bed will work on, it’s a chopped up room the only other wall would put the bed where you would have to walk around the bed as soon as you walk in, or it would be in another corner -this spot was the only workable solution, and since it’s a guest room that isn’t used much, it works
The bedroom is beautiful. IV been looking for a mattress for a long time. I must check this one out.
thanks so much Carol
So lush, cozy, and welcoming. I absolutely love the color on that duvet. My husband and I own a plumbing supply store so I got a kick out of your choice of the copper fittings for the air plants. I may have to go in today and spruce up our store with some plants. I’m inspired 🙂
oh you totally should!!
I’m obsessed! I want to crawl into that bed and never leave!
that’s one of the dangers of this bed! lol
I love all the little touches, especially those copper pipe fittings for the plants!
Thanks so much Sylvie! I love the copper “planters” too 😉
Such a beautiful space! We really could use some new mattresses… off to check them out!
Thanks Jess – you can come here to check it out 😉
Wow! Such a gorgeous guest room, Cheryl! Love how cozy the bed looks and all of the fun decor… especially that “keep on smiling…” print! Darling!
Thanks so much Sara
This mattress sounds exactly what I need.
I checked online and there are so many options for the
Comforpedic iQ. Can’t find prices either.
Which model did you purchase?
Thanks in advance for any info you can give me on your mattress purchase.
This is soooo cute! I love the sweet details like the mercury glass vase and the pearl necklace on the bust. Of course my favorite detail is that fluffy pillow… but I am a pillow hoarder so no surprise there! The whole room looks amazing, your guests will love it. (The mattress sounds great too… but don’t tell my hubby he’s been lobbying for a new one for our guest room but it’s just not in the cards this year!)
I love it! Especially love the copper fittings!
I love the picture on wall and the purple comforter. I really like the paint color too. It works. I love it !
I love the duvet! I’m thinking about buying it but I’m always hesitant to buy bedding without feeling it, is it soft? I like soft, cooler cotton linens (not flannel), would you recommend it? Thanks so much, gorgeous work you’ve done here!
Does anyone know who the artist of the floral canvas is? I can’t find it at Home Goods so was hoping I could look for it online somewhere .
Wondering what color is currently on the walls in this picture. Needing to paint our bedroom and love the color!
I’m sorry, I don’t know. The previous owners painted the room.
Beautiful job! I especially like the copper pipe “pots”. But really, the whole room is great!
Those copper plumbing fittings make great idea for the air plant, I love it.
i really love the color of wall! I need to paint my room soon.
I am going to make over my bedroom soon and I am going to make it same as yours.thanks for sharing.
