Little Known Facts About A Dark and Stormy Cocktail

Do you ever wonder how a cocktail came to be or how it got its name? Well, I do! Anytime we make a new drink I’m obsessed with looking up the origin. I thought I’d share a little bit of what I found in case there are anymore cocktail history freaks out there like me.

The dark and stormy is the official cocktail of Bermuda, which is where the drink was first created. The combination of ginger beer and dark rum creates an eery storm like color when mixed together.

The legend is that the drink got its name after a sailor claimed the color of the drink was the “color of a cloud only a fool or a dead man would sail under.”

What’s In A Blackberry Dark and Stormy Cocktail?

Any dark and stormy cocktail has two important components that can’t be missed.

You’ll need ginger beer and a good dark rum. They say that an authentic dark and stormy is made with Gosling Black Seal Rum, but any dark rum will suffice in this case. Then, you’ll top it off with a little lime juice for an extra punch of flavor.

Now is where the recipe twist comes in. To add the blackberry component, you’ll take a muddler and mash up the blackberries in the bottom of the shaker. Add in some mint and rum, shake, and top it off with a little ginger beer and you’re ready to enjoy!

What Is Muddling?

I am in no way a cocktail expert, which leaves me shamelessly googling terms and techniques when it comes to cocktail creation. So, let’s just skip the step where you might have to google what muddling is and let me fill you in.

Muddling involves pressing ingredients into the side and bottom of a glass with a special tool called a muddler. The process helps release the flavors of the fresh ingredients so they can bind with the alcohol properly.

To properly muddle, come directly over the shaker (don’t tip the glass) and pushed down on the ingredients twisting your hand a quarter twist as you press down. Continue to repeat this motion until the desired consistency had been reached.

Secrets for the Best Blackberry Dark and Stormy

If you want a bartender quality cocktail there are a few tricks of the trade you’ll want to follow for this recipe.

When muddling, first muddle the lime and mint, then add the blackberry and muddle the mixture again. It’s important to follow the steps in this way because the blackberries don’t need to be muddled to the extent of the line and mint.

You also want to make sure you have a good shaker on hand. Stirring the cocktail won’t give the same effect as shaking, and the ingredients won’t combine as well, leaving separated flavors.

If at all possible use fresh blackberries. Of course, thawed, frozen fruit will work, but I highly recommend the fresh fruit for this recipe. It really adds that refreshing burst that you don’t want to miss
