Mason jars aren’t just for canning….
It’s the end of the month and time for another 10 Minute Idea! This series is based on the idea that sometimes ten minutes is all we have but that doesn’t mean we can’t use that time to come up with beautiful and useful ideas. Each month, a fabulous team of creative bloggers will be sharing ideas with you, so make sure you scroll all the way through to find the other projects.
Now that we have officially kicked off summer, 4th of July is just around the corner. These Patriotic Colored Rice Jars are super easy and can be whipped up in no time! With just a few supplies (you probably even have everything you need on hand) and a few minutes, you can have some festive patriotic decorations perfect for table decor all summer long!
The actual tutorial itself is fairly simple and you may have seen how to color rice already around the web, but if not, you can see how I made these Patriotic Colored Rice Jars. I love how simple and pretty they look during the day and even better when glowing on a Summer night at dusk.
This month’s 10 Minutes Ideas theme is crafts, you can definitely make these in 10 minutes, or less! It’s also a great craft to let the kids help with!
How to make Patriotic Colored Rice Jars
Supplies to Make Patriotic Colored Rice Jars
- rice
- jars
- candles (votives or tealight candles)
- food color (red and blue)
- 2 glass bowls (or stainless steel bowls – you don’t want to use plastic, the food color will stain them)
- 2 large sheet pans
- 2 metal spoons
- measuring cup
Directions
I used four 16-ounce jars and 6 cups of white rice. So I measured out 4 cups of rice and placed 2 cups in each of the two bowls. (I also set aside 2 cups of rice that I would leave white)
Place several drops of one color in the bowl and mix rice using a metal spoon. (*you can also read how to color rice for sensory play – you will want to add vinegar as well as the food color)
repeat with the other color.
Once you have dyed your rice, spread each color out on a baking sheet to dry about 10-15 minutes.
Since I don’t have a funnel, I placed one of the jars in a bowl (to catch any rice that didn’t make it into the jar).
Layer rice in jars for desired pattern. I used 1/2 cup of red, 1/2 cup white and then 1/2 cup blue rice.
Last, gently set a small candle in the middle of the rice, and you’re done!
That’s it! See, I told you they were really simple! Like I said, you can use them all summer. Simply place the top on the jars and store away in between parties or for next year!
