Easy Ham and Swiss Sliders

At some point in your life, chances are you’ve had a ham and cheese sandwich. It’s a childhood staple in all of our lives! However, your average ham and cheese can NOT compare to these oven-baked ham and cheese sliders.

I’m a firm believer that sweet Hawaiian rolls make just about everything tastier. I’ve never met a dish with Hawaiian bread that I didn’t like! So when I was thinking of the perfect bread to make these savory sliders with, I knew exactly what I needed to do! This sweet bread perfectly compliments the savory ham and gooey swiss cheese.

When I first served these at a football party years ago, they flew off the tray within seconds. Of all the appetizers I’ve ever made, these might just be the most irresistible! They’re gone in just a few bites, which always leaves friends and family coming back for more. If you’re looking for the perfect game day appetizer, this is just the recipe for you.

How To Make Ham And Swiss Sliders

(full printable recipe at the end of this post)

You only need 8 ingredients and about 30 minutes of your time to make a batch of these mouthwatering sandwiches. Your kitchen is going to smell absolutely heavenly while they bake!

First things first – preheat your oven to 350F. While that’s heating up, spray a 9×13 pan with cooking spray and set it aside.

When it comes to preparing the bread, you just need to slice the loaf of rolls in half with a long serrated knife. Be sure to leave the rolls themselves intact! Do NOT pull the rolls apart. Once they’re sliced in half, place the bottom half of the rolls in the prepared pan.

Working in layers, place the ham and swiss on top of the bottom layer of rolls. It doesn’t matter how you layer the ingredients – the sliders will be cheesy and delicious no matter what. Once they have enough ham and cheese, place the top layer of rolls over the filling and set aside.

Time to make my favorite part – the topping! In a small bowl, add melted butter, poppy seeds, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, and onion powder. Whisk it all together to fully combine. Then, slowly and evenly pour the flavorful butter mixture over the rolls.

You’re almost done! Bake the sliders for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the tops are a beautiful golden brown.

Before cutting and serving, let the sliders cool for a few minutes. This will help them retain their shape, and keep you from burning your mouth! Once they’ve cooled slightly, cut and serve them warm. Enjoy!

Ham and Swiss Sliders Tips

The best way to evenly spread the butter mixture is to use a rubber spatula or brush. You definitely want to be diligent with this step, that way each slider is just as delicious as the one next to it.

Some butter will pool at the bottom of the pan, and that’s okay! In fact, it’s more than okay, it’s downright delicious. That butter is seriously tasty! However, don’t use any more butter mixture than what the recipe calls for. As much as I love extra butter on just about everything, too much of the savory sauce can make the sliders soggy.

If you want even more flavor, try serving these with some spicy mayo on the side or cracked black pepper on top! There are so many ways you can dress up these simple sliders. While I like them just the way they are, they’d be delicious with several different additions.

Storage and Variations

Do I need to refrigerate these sliders? If you have any leftover sliders, you’ll need to keep them in an airtight container in the fridge. They’ll stay fresh for up to 3 days. It’s rare that I ever have any of these left over, but when I do, I love having them for lunch the next day. They reheat perfectly in the oven or microwave!

Can I freeze ham and cheese sliders? Yes, you surely can! Just like the fridge, you’ll need to keep the sliders in an airtight container. They’ll stay fresh for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to serve them, just pop them in the fridge overnight. The next day, they should be thawed and ready to reheat!

Variations

Wanna really turn up the heat? Toss some crushed red pepper flakes on top of the rolls along with the poppy seeds. You can also add cayenne pepper to the butter mixture! If you really want to spice things up, you can add your favorite hot sauce in the middle of the sandwich with the meat and cheese.

If you’re a big cheese lover, don’t be afraid to add even more cheese! I served these once with swiss and sharp white cheddar at a birthday party. They were so gooey and decadent! I ended up sharing the recipe with just about everyone at the party.

If there’s a vegetarian you’re catering towards, you can just leave ham out of a part of the rolls. This recipe can make tasty cheese sandwiches, too!
