Today is the first day of Spring, everything outdoors is starting to look fresh and new again, which gets me in the mood to do the same indoors.
Last week I mentioned today would start the Spring Cleaning Challenge and I’m tackling the kitchen.
Spring cleaning is especially important in the kitchen. I stay on top of my kitchen on a daily basis, but a least once a year I follow these extra steps to get my kitchen clean enough for a food inspector’s seal of approval.
Table of Contents
10 Steps for Spring Cleaning in the Kitchen
Start by removing all clutter and disinfecting counter-tops and dishtowels and then crank up some music and follow these extra steps:
1. Dust and wipe down walls
use this time to clean the grease, grime, and spilled food from your walls. Check corners for cobwebs and dust down corners and trim.
2. Dust and clean items hanging on walls and on top of cabinets.
Wipe down frames and glass and anything hanging on the walls. Don’t forget air vents, doorknobs, doors, switch plates. If you have items on top of your kitchen cabinets, they may need a good scrubbing, as those items tend to get a grease and dust stuck to them. Fill a sink with hot water and dish washing soap to help cut thru grease.
3. Dust and clean light fixtures.
Take down any light fixtures and gently wash and dry them before replacing. If you have a light with exposed light bulb, turn the light off and when it’s cool, dust light bulbs too.
4. Clean windows and window treatments.
Vacuum and clean windowsills. Wash windows, inside and out. Be sure to take down and rinse off screens, before replacing. Remove window treatments and blinds/shades and clean according to manufacture’s instructions. How to clean blinds. My easy window cleaning tip.
5. Clean inside of cabinets and drawers.
Remove everything from inside cabinets , wipe down shelves, and replace and reorganize items. Do the same for drawers. This is a good time to go thru and clean out unused and expired items.
6. Clean appliances.
If you don’t have a self cleaning oven, spray oven cleaner and let it work while you clean other appliances. Don’t forget to open windows in the kitchen to avoid the overpowering smell.
- Refrigerator – Throw out expired food, and remove everything, placing the items to keep on the counter or table. Remove refrigerator shelves and drawers. Wash them down, being careful with glass shelves. Wipe down the entire interior of the refrigerator and freezer with the baking-soda solution, and wipe it dry before replacing shelves and food. Pull refrigerator out, if you can, and unplug and clean behind and underneath. See my favorite tool for this, my refrigerator coil brush.
- Microwave – Start with a damp rag and wipe out any lose crumbs from interior. Then, fill a microwave safe bowl or cup with 4-5 tablespoons baking soda or one-half cup lemon juice and water and heat mixture on high for two to three minutes. When time is up, let it sit for five minutes, then carefully remove cup or bowl and wipe down interior effortlessly with a damp cloth. If you still have stains, try damping your rag with vinegar or a little baking soda to gently scrub away stains. Don’t forget to remove and wash glass turntable. Once everything is sparkling again, leave the door open to air out for bit. Clean exterior and door with only warm, soapy water and soft cloth. Wipe control panels with a barely damp (not wet) cloth; moisture behind the panel could ruin the oven.
- Dishwasher – run empty dishwasher with vinegar. Read my full post on how to clean a dishwasher.
- Oven/Stove – Wipe down and clean out the oven according to the directions on the oven cleaner. Remove, knobs, burners, burner covers, and spill catchers off of the stove and wipe off food spills and splatters, for glass cook tops use a dab of commercial cooktop cleaner on a dry paper towel, and then wipe off the cleaner with another dry towel.
7. Wipe down and clean small appliances.
Unplug all appliances first.
- Mixer – Wash beaters by hand, wipe down base with a damp cloth. If the vent is clogged, loosen the dirt with a toothpick or toothbrush, then vacuum it out.
- Toaster/Toaster oven – clean out crumbs and wipe down the interior and exterior. Be sure to remove racks; wash them in warm, soapy water.
- Coffee Maker – Pour equal parts white vinegar and water into the tank, and run the machine. Empty out carafe and run two or three cycles with fresh water before brewing coffee. Wash carafe and any other removable parts in hot soapy water and wipe down exterior of machine. For any hard water build up on outside of machine, use a cloth soaked in vinegar to removed hard water crust.
8. Clean and shine sink and drain.
Clean your drain with baking soda and vinegar, If you have a garbage disposal, put ice cubes through the disposal to sharpen the blades. Read my post on how to clean/freshen or unclog a drain with vinegar and baking soda. Make you sink shine, by filling your sink to the rim with HOT water and 1 cup of bleach, let it sit for one hour, then remove plug (using tongs or wear gloves), rinse then scrub your sink and faucet with a mild abrasive, I LOVE Barkeepers Friend, rinse thoroughly and finish with a little window cleaner and a paper towel. How to make your sink shine with the Fly Lady.
9. Clean garbage cans.
Wash inside and out with a strong bleach solution (about 3/4 cup per gallon of water).
10. Sweep and mop the floors.
Although this is a step you already do on a regular basis, use spring cleaning to do an extra good job, move furniture to get underneath, get corners, baseboards and even get down on your hands and knees if you can for even a closer clean.

Cheryl, I went through your spring cleaning tips. It would be much better if you can send someone to do it for me. Love your ideas. Thank you for the opportunity to let me win the washer dryer. I can at least press the buttons…..
Favorite place to clean is my bedroom – it is so small that it takes no time at all but the reward is great! Least favorite place: the family van! It just never is REALLY clean and the reward is so minimal ( since it doesn’t last….)
I dislike cleaning the tile grout… It’s a pain. I also dislike mopping! And furthermore… OH who am I kidding I just dislike cleaning lol
I absolutely can’t stand cleaning the fridge!
I hate to clean the kitchen floor….between the dried on food, dog hair, and the collecting corners….ick!
I hate to clean baseboards —
I can’t stand cleaning the bathroom grout and tile. It’s white. We have black animals. I feel I can never get the little fur to completely go away!
My favorite thing to clean is the kitchen counter. My least favorite thing to clean is the kitchen floor. I hate to mop!
HATE cleaning the garage…or the kitchen…or anywhere that will end up with me looking at things I forgot we had instead of cleaning. *sigh*
I dislike cleaning the den/family room. With 4 kids and a 100 lb lab, it is always in disarray. Nothing ever seems to stay in one place for long. Your site is addicting!! Love it!!
I love to clean my kitchen, I feel like I have really accomplished something when it is clean. HATE to clean bathrooms. UGH.
Cleaning the bathroom, too many men in the household.
The only reason I hate to clean our bathroom toilet is because when we added on to the house the measurements got off. The master toilet is very close to the wall. I have to reach to get it all clean and I can’t see what I’m doing. Yuck. TOO TIGHT. I do like to do the laundry. Thanks for the chance to win a new washer and dryer. Love your site.
I hate to clean my son’s bathroom.
My least favorite thing to clean is the bathroom! 🙁
I love to clean the bathroom, I have twin boys and they are messy……..so I love the smell of bleach in the air knowing that I have a sparkeling bathroom to use….I hate the family room to clean because there are so many little toys to put away it seems like it takes forever…
I hate cleaning the closets… Too much dust. – I love to clean the blankets and drapes.. The small of line-dried anything is awesome.
I dislike cleaning the basement, or Dungeon as it known im my house, it has a laundry room, a small office, my husband odd and end tools and a room with over 600 barbies, and other collectables.
I hate the dirty dishes. I dread doing this.
I love cleaning out the refrigerator – I find it very therapeutic to toss out old, expired bottles and wiping down the shelves. It feels so great to have a fresh start.
I love cleaning the refrigerator.
I absolutely HATE cleaning the bathrooms in my house.. i mean given that its only my husband and
i in the house so they don’t exactly get disgusting because we do keep them clean, but to me cleaning them on that regular basis really chaps my hide.
I HATE folding and putting laundry away. I LOVE cleaning the kitchen though. All the smells of lysol and lemony cleaning goodness…it’s therapeutic 🙂
I would have to say my least favorite place to clean is the bathroom or the kitchen after I’ve been baking all day! I don’t know if I have a favorite something to clean. Is that a trick question ; )?
Just reading this list exhausted me and I consider myself of the Sookie Stackhouse Southern School of Cleaning for Stress Relief. And I only live in/have to clean a 700sq ft, 1-bedroom apartment.
The thing I hate most is mopping though, because no matter how often I do it or try to scrub down corners they just refuse to really get clean.
I hate cleaning my sons bathroom, he seems to always miss the toilet and I have to clean the top of the toilet and I am constantly mopping the floors. Since this is the main bathroom for when we have guests I’m always afraid there will be a mess when we have company . Hopefully as he becomes older he will keep (his) bathroom cleaner. Well I can at least hope.
My least favorite cleaning is the carpets! Whether its vaccuming or carpet cleaning. I just don’t like it!
I really don’t like to clean the bathrooms, or mop floors. If I could hire a maid to do those two tasks I would be a happy woman!
Just getting started is my challenge but once the ball is rolling watch out.
I really really really REALLY dislike drying the dishes. For me, drying the dishes makes my hands feel dry and unloved…not to mention like fingernails on a chalkboard when you wipe that towel on those sparkly clean dishes O_o
I really hate cleaning the bathroom. I take preventative measures to make it easier – like shower spray after showering. But that only works if your whole family will do it.
My least liked cleaning task is shower doors (lemon oil can cut the grime and keep the shine) and floors. I really enjoy a clean house, but it IS a chore to get (and keep) it that way! One method that works once your house is clean is the 10-minutes per room method–it never really gets bad if you spend 10-minutes per day in each room.
I hate cleaning the bathrooms. Ick!
I hate mopping my floors but am always glad when I do!
I hate cleaning shower curtains.
I hate cleaning the bathrooms!!
The closet is the worst.. I have no organizational rods or bins and its hard to find anything in there, besides to get rid of dust you have to remove everything… Then the kitchen as it is way way too small for someone who loves to cook and bake… it is smaller than a galley kitchen with no counter space to speak of and tiny shelves.. I dream of organized closets and a dream kitchen!
I hate doing the dishes! I don’t mind doing most of the other chores around the house but the dishes are the absolute worst. So gross!
I hate cleaning the room I like to call Land of the Left it aka our Dining Room… Everyone and I mean everyone drops everything in there and just leaves it. I avoid it at all costs!!!!
PS…. my washer just went out I REALLY could use a new one….
I dread having to clean behind the toilet. Between the tank and our “vintage” green tile wall there is a colony of mold that accumulates. It is almost impossible to get in there to scrub so I try to forget about it. I usually just spray a diluted bleach solution back in there and let it soak for an hour or so then do my best to wipe it away.
Laundry is my enemy….and keeping my laundry room neat!
My least favorite place to clean is the inside of the refrigerator!
My least favorite place to clean is the place on our kitchen counters where everyone’s paper work collects!
I hate bathrooms….and I hate cleaning ovens….and I hate cleaning my kids rooms!
My least favorite place to clean is the bathroom! Gross!
I hate cleaning the high shelves… dusting anything really is just the most horrible for me.
I don’t care to vacuum! There is just something about taking it out of the closet, bending down to plug it in that makes me avoid it. However, after I’m done I feel very accomplished and it wasn’t bad at all. Thankfully, my 2 year old wants to help and I just send him with a swivel sweeper and for 1/3 an hour 1.) he is occupied and I get WAY more things done and 2.) my floors look *better*.
My favorite place to clean is the kitchen pantry. I love getting things organized, which I can do as I clean. Since I visit the pantry so often, I get a great sense of accomplishment when I can easily find what I need and can see what I need to replace. My least favorite places to clean: behind the stove and refrigerator. First off, they are so hard to move. Secondly, it’s so grungy back there. Yikes!
The garage and basement!
I’m a reluctant house cleaner who’s married to a neat freak! I love the way my house looks and feels when I’ve cleaned it It’s worth it, but I’ll probably always be terrible at it! The worst are the shower with the tile and grout – I use a toothbrush and a homemade bleaching paste, which works wonders – but it’s tedious! Secondly, it’s the kitchen floor – we have an old vinyl tile and it’s a nightmare to keep up with! Love your tips and tricks – thanks!
