Family Room Update IKEA VITTSJÖ | I’m Lovin It

I’m so excited to share my family room makeover progress with you!! We moved last June after being in the same house for 16 years, and I knew the family room was the first room I wanted to decorate! It’s the center of the house, and the first room you see when you walk in the front door.
We started with paint, and oh my did I fall in LOVE. We painted the walls Benjamin Moore Coventry Gray to go with my Martha Stewart Saybridge Sofas I had bought before we moved.
You might remember, Jess from Four Generations One Roof has been helping me virtually with Family Room decor ideas and inspiration. In my last update, I showed you the beautiful vintage buffet turned media cabinet I bought. The piece was perfect since I knew I didn’t want a big massive entertainment center, but I didn’t know what to do with the rest of the wall. Jess suggested metal and glass bookcases on each side, since I already had a lot of wood, and I could place a chair in front of the one down by the fireplace.
We decided the IKEA VITTSJÖ shelving units would be perfect!! We originally thought I would pain them gold, but once I had them in the room, I decided I like the black…..for now any way.
**note, the closest IKEA to St. Louis is 6 hours away, so I used Expedite STL to get my bookcases. If you’re in the St. Louis area I totally recommend using them! It’s a business owned by a St. Louis couple, who drives up to Chicago once a month to IKEA and will pick up what ever you want and bring it back for you – you pay a small delivery fee and pick it up at their home! It was WAY cheaper than paying IKEA freight charges (which would have been more than the shelves cost).
I’ve been slowly trying to fill the shelves. Steve is thrilled that I asked if I could display his deer antlers.
I shopped the house for much of it but I have picked up a few things here and there.
Sources: (If it’s not in this list, then I’ve already owned it for a few years)

I can’t get over what a little paint, a few new pieces of furniture and accessories can do to a room! Look at the difference we’ve made already!
What’s left to do?
Walls – I need something over the TV, and I’m not sure I want to keep the mirror over the love seat or the large art over the big sofa
floor – ideally, I would like wood floors with a rug, but until that happens, I’d be happy with a pretty rug over the carpet
tables – for now, the coffee table and end table are staying, until I can find something I love.
brown chair & ottoman – I originally wanted to replace these, but it’s a super comfy chair, and it’s also where I sit when I watch TV. So, for now, it’s staying until I find a fabulous replacement.
pillows – I’d like to make some new covers for some of the throw pillows – there is too much yellow there, and too many pillows lol

Wow! Your living room looks GREAT! I love those shelves. They look so clean. Thanks for the party. Have a great weekend.
Love your makeover! The blue chair just pops in the room…looks amazing along with all the eclectic mix of accents! I want to redo my family room as well, but it is such a big undertaking to start from scratch!

I’m LOVIN it!!!! 🙂 I will never be sick of you 🙂 hehe. My fav picture is the up close blue chair with the shelving behind it. Love it!
Thank you for hosting another great party, Cheryl!
Oh wow. Love the light airiness the shelves offer by not overpowering the rest of the room. Great choice! Our Ikea is 4 hours each way, so I never get up there. I totally get it. Poor us right? Must say, the media center piece is a stunner!!!! So, so pretty. Congrats on the beautiful room. Enjoy!
I would love to know where you got the curtains.
Thank you so much for hosting Cheryl! Your living room looks stunning and I love that blue chair by the TV! Love your organized garage too! Happy Spring! Angie xo
Cheryl, I’m in love with your family room! I always thought grey would look drab but it is so bright and cheerful in your room! I’m hoping to redo my living room in the next few months and may have to rethink my color choices! If only you could just do it all for me!
You’ve done a great job with this room! I’m on my way to check out some of your resources 🙂 Have a great day!
Love the makeover. Y’all did a great job.
You had me as soon as I saw yellow and grey. My favourite! Great job.
I love how it turned out. My favorite is the mirror above the couch (uh, and the grey wall color) and the antlers. It’s such a great collection of textures.
fabulous makeover! I need your help 🙂
Have you considered contacting an Uppercase Living rep to get some ideas for above your television? An adorable quote would work well there :). Great job so far!!!
So beautiful. I’m lovin’ it!
It looks like a totally different room! Great job!
I love the artwork above your couch – yellow and gray are such a great color combo. Thanks for hosting 🙂

All looks wonderful with the makeover except the white piece holding the tv sticks out.I would think to color it black to match the Ikea shelves.

CHERYL!!!! it’s all beautiful! I love all your accessories & the colors. So peaceful. I too, love the close up with the blue chair & the shelves in the back ground. So pretty!
This looks so lovely…great work! It’s really amazing how versatile many of IKEA’s shelving units are. Also, love your West Elm scribble curtains. We have the exact same ones in our family room. 😉
Great shelf styling.
I think the room looks great, Cheryl. Every element blends with the rest and the room looks very cosy. I always thought makeovers like these could be accomplished by a pro, but you proved me wrong.
