Gray Tufted Sofa | I’m Lovin’ It

I’m slowly making progress on our family room makeover.
My new tufted sofa and loveseat were delivered this week!!! Can I say, I love them in my house as much as I did when I first pinned them!
I mentioned recently that we’ve s l o w l y been working on making over our family room. Back in November we got rid of the carpet in this room, and replaced it with laminate flooring, which I LOVE! I took advantage of having all the furniture out of the room, and painted the walls a very light gray and the trim white.
I didn’t want to do anything else until I found a new sofa and love seat. At first I was leaning towards slip-covered, and almost bought the Ikea Ektorp, until I heard that it’s not very comfortable. Next, I thought about the Pottery Barn Basic set, but they were a bit more than what I was hoping to spend………..so I kind of stopped looking and hoped something would just “hit me” eventually.
I don’t remember how I found her……..but I pinned this Martha Stewart tufted back sofa in a luscious cornflower blue. Shortly after, I received a President’s Day Sale email from Macy’s! It was fate! President’s Day is a big furniture sale time and my dream sofa was on sale!! I knew I couldn’t do the cornflower blue, but I loved the gray every bit as much.
I headed over to Macy’s to check her out in person. This Martha Stewart Saybridge Sofa has a 4.5 star review rating on Macy website, but I wanted to sit on it and try her out for myself. Come to find out, the gray color, Storm, was the stock color and only color included in the sale price. I could certainly live with THAT!!
I placed my order for the sofa and love seat and they arrived at our home just 2 days ago. Even my super picky husband loves them! They are wonderfully firm, but comfortable, deep and long, great for when my 6’4″ sweetie wants to nap on them 😉
What I still need to do in this room:
- a new coffee table,
- floor lamp
- I want to get rid of the oak roll-top desk and replace it with either a cabinet or buffet type piece
- TV stand- I’m leaning towards this one from Home Decorators Collection, if we take it out of the corner
- walls – I’m at a loss on what to do with the big wall, but would like a photo gallery of some sort.
- rug? some days I think I want a rug, and other days I love how clean the space is with out one – so not sure on that yet
- accessories
What is staying
- window treatments. Emma Floral curtains are from World Market – I love that they are yellow, brown and gray. Chocolate brown bamboo shades are from Lowes
- oversized chocolate chair and ottoman – we bought this just a year ago at Carol House Furniture in St. Louis, so it’s staying.
- TV
Here’s one view of the space – as you can see, it’s not a very big room, and I’m just not sure what to do next – I would love some suggestions in the comments!!
Where we’ve come from:
Here’s a before shot – you can see more in this post I did way back in 2010 when I stated I wanted a change! lol…..told you I’m SLOW
and this post show’s some of the progress when we got started late last year.
At least I’m slowly getting rid of the dark “country” decor. I love how much difference it’s made already!!
Leave me some suggestions in the comments!!!! I need all the help I can get!
***UPDATE FEB 2016***
We moved in June 2014 you can see the Martha Stewart Saybridge Sofa in our new home
I get a lot of emails asking me how long we’ve had the sofa and how it’s held up.
in Nov 2015 we got new flooring and I wanted a sectional for our family room, so we moved the Martha Stewart Saybridge sofa and loveseat to our finished basement. We have had it almost 3 years and it has held up well, other than the seat cushions on the sofa have gotten lumpy (you can see that in the photo above). Other than that, the fabric and structure has held up very well to daily use.
We now have laminate floors and Macy’s Elliot Sectional Sofa in Vintage

So far it looks great…such a big difference since your first picture. I’m not much of an interior decorator, so I don’t really have any tips for you. I do love how the gray and yellow looks in your room.
what a gorgeous room makeover! I am LOVING the sofa as well:)
have a great weekend
Love your sofa! Your family room is looking fantastic! … Thanks for the party! 🙂
Your room is coming along wonderfully!! I LOVE the sofa and the wall color looks great with the flooring. I can’t believe you want to get rid of the desk – I really like it! Sometimes I guess you just need a change though. I think a carpet would like awesome in there (of course I have been looking for one for our family room that I like and can afford for a couple of years now!) 🙂 Can’t wait to see the final reveal! Thanks so much for hosting and have a wonderful weekend!
Jenn
Thanks so much – we’ll be keeping the desk, I’m just tired of it in that room. It was actually from my bedroom set I had growing up!!
oh cheryl! that sofa & love seat are gorgeous! i mean they are divine looking. i love a tufted anything!
i just clicked on to see what tv cabinet you were thinking about getting & i love your choice for that as well.
the gray walls – wow! what a difference! the entire room looks so pretty! it’s always so fun to start to see progress on a room!
thanks for the party!

Thanks so much for the party Cheryl!!!
love the new room so far! we are about to start a room renovation and i’m kinda dreading it, but you are getting me to come around with the before and afters!
That sofa is fantastic! Love it! Thanks so much for the party. I ‘m laughing at my chair in the middle of all the food! ha 😀
Thanks so much for hosting! Hope you have a great weekend!
I think a great area rug with both brown and gray in it would tie the new sofa in with the chair / ottoman. (Or some cool throw pillows) Looks beautiful. What shade of gray is on the walls?
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. – although I have ordered throw pillows that match the curtains and they have both brown and gray in them.
For the paint color, I need to look that up on one of our extra cans. I bought enough to do the foyer and it’s never gotten done yet lol 😉
Absolutely lovely room! Am wondering if you were able to find the name of the paint color? It’s a great combination with the sofa. Thanks!
Love it, Cheryl! You know, you can never go wrong with Martha! 🙂
If you decide to look for a rug, World Market has some great ones and I think their prices are pretty reasonable.
So fun to see what you’re up to!
Thanks – I should look there! that’s where the curtains are from, and I ordered matching throw pillows the other day.
I didn’t think I was making that much progress until I found those old pics from 2010 today lol
Cheryl!! I love the new couch and chair so much! The room is coming along nicely. I love the World Market curtains as well. A fun hutch piece would be nice in the room in place of the roll top…or you could paint the roll top desk!
my husband wont let me paint the desk. It’s from my room when I was growing up – so he wants to keep it as is (men! lol)
Thanks for the sweet comments Amy!
I just recently got a gray sectional for my living room and love it! Your room is looking fabulous – can’t wait to see what comes next 🙂 Thanks so much for hosting Cheryl!
The room is gorgeous Cheryl! I have two rooms in Tiffany’s room painted light grey and it makes the impression is such a big room. I LOVE the sofa and love seat, such a great color.
Thanks so much for hosting, Cheryl! What a big difference in your room already! I’m totally crushing on that gray sofa! Have a wonderful evening : )

Hi Cheryl! Thank you so much for hosting! Your living room is looking fabulous! Love the sofa! And also, your girls are gorgeous! I have one who is in Grade 11 and will be off to University before we know it, so I feel your pain. My son will be in Grade 7 next year, so I still have time with him. Comfkorting to know that I am not the only blogger out there who doesn’t have little kids anymore! Thanks so much for being such an amazing blog role model! Angie xo
That sofa is gorgeous! I’m so happy you got it. We have one on order from Zgallerie. I am impatiently awaiting its arrival! Thanks for the party Cheryl!
Love the updated look! Have a great weekend!
I would leave the couch where it is, put the loveseat in front of the window and move the brown chair and ottoman to where the desk is now (since you’re going to take it out of the room anyway). And then you can put that gorgeous tv stand that you want against the wall that holds the loveseat now.
The room doesn’t look that small, especially since you can fit a sofa, loveseat and chair and ottoman in it, but I would forgo a cabinet or buffet type piece in there. HTH!
The furniture looks super comfy!
That’s one of the ideas I had – BUT as you can see, we get good sun in that room, and I’m afraid moving the loveseat in front of the window will fade the fabric ;(
I LOVE the sofa!
Thanks for the party, Cheryl! 🙂
Thank you so much for hosting, Cheryl 🙂
thanks so much for the fun party! 🙂
LOVE the new sofa!! Your living room looks gorgeous!! I am IN LOVE with roll-top desk!! I love it there. I would love it more if it came to live at my house. 😀 Can’t wait to see what else you do!! 🙂 xoxo

I LOVE the makeover so far! The coffee table is kinda cool…what about sanding and painting or staining it? Just a thought!
I am by no means an interior designer but I am an hgtv junkie, old house rehab addict and art college grad/pro photog. IMHO, your drapes are so fabulous they are stealing the gourgesness from your fabulous ms couches. I would bring more of that yellow in through room. Suggest painting, in a distressed way, the coffee table, use a yellow pickle process, sine hubs will not condone roll top painting, use your leverage woman and paint the coffee table instead. Mine will not let me touch the entire wood Trim in our 1890 Victorian. So when we gutted the bathroom I said the TRIM in here will be white buddy. I am loving the gallery idea, perhaps use yellow trimmed frames, with some black I always anchor some accessories in black. Also gives you the pop to show your photg skills. Double win. Rug? Sisal or sea grass, neutral and would anchor the coffee table. Sun fading love seat, gives you an excuse to buy new! Go big on your photos, don’t center over sofa. Take risks, be bold. Go b and w only. I am coveting your love poster, where did you get it? Good luck and I am now addicted to your blog now!
The sofas look so nice. I love the colour and the tufting. Thanks for the party. Have a great weekend. 🙂
Thanks so much for the party!
what a beautiful space! I can’t wait to do some re-designing. I’m clueless… I need help! Pinterest helps a lot.
Love the new sofa!!

Let me just say – Gorgeous!
Love the sofa! Is it a true gray. It looks like it in the picture, but some comments on Macy’s say it is more sage???
A wall gallery of pictures behind the sofa would look great.
Nope, it’s a true gray – in my house any way.
I LOVE your space!! And, I need that sofa! 🙂
I LOVE that sofa! I checked out the blue one, and I definitely like the gray better, so nice job. 🙂 I’m not sure how large your TV is, but I think your current coffee table could be a super cute TV stand if you were to paint it and maybe switch out the pulls for glass knobs.
Beyond cute. I pinned a similar one last Winter and when I saw yours, BAM. I remembered just how gorgeous it was. Congrats on the fab new purchase, both pieces are so pretty!!!! They just look plush and decadent. Enjoy 🙂
The room looks great.
I would keep the coffee table as you already know the size works whoever I would paint it white and change up the knobs to get a new look. That would help pull your color scheme together.
Keep of the great work !!
I was thinking maybe the same thing – my dad was a furniture builder and made me that coffee table, oh I bet 15 years ago, and it’s already been painted over a few times lol…….but it might be nice in white with new knobs!!
Hi Cheryl! I just discovered your fabulous site! What an incredible transformation your living room has undergone! Love the sofas and the bare laminate floors… don’t get a rug! It’s a great look, especially with the chalkboard art. Thanks for hosting the link party!
Thank you for hosting! I love all of the choices that you have made for your family room. So many great suggestions have been made … love the idea of painting the coffee table and new knobs can make such a difference. My suggestion for the art gallery – wait until all the furniture is in it’s permanent place – keep the large ‘love’ piece and add to it – maybe smaller black and white prints in black frames matted with white or yellow?
I liv ur make over room! Where can I find that roll up desk? I have been looking for one for quite sometime?
it’s basically an antique – it was part of my bedroom set when I was growing up 😉
Where did you get your coffee table? My daughter would love that a piece like that!
My dad was a furniture builder and made it about 15 years ago. 🙂
I want that sofa SO bad!! I’m really considering it for myself.
The room looks so different now, what a transformation! I love the soft grey with the pops of yellow.
