I’m slowly making progress on our family room makeover.
My new tufted sofa and loveseat were delivered this week!!! Can I say, I love them in my house as much as I did when I first pinned them!
I mentioned recently that we’ve s l o w l y been working on making over our family room. Back in November we got rid of the carpet in this room, and replaced it with laminate flooring, which I LOVE! I took advantage of having all the furniture out of the room, and painted the walls a very light gray and the trim white.
I didn’t want to do anything else until I found a new sofa and love seat. At first I was leaning towards slip-covered, and almost bought the Ikea Ektorp, until I heard that it’s not very comfortable. Next, I thought about the Pottery Barn Basic set, but they were a bit more than what I was hoping to spend………..so I kind of stopped looking and hoped something would just “hit me” eventually.
I don’t remember how I found her……..but I pinned this Martha Stewart tufted back sofa in a luscious cornflower blue. Shortly after, I received a President’s Day Sale email from Macy’s! It was fate! President’s Day is a big furniture sale time and my dream sofa was on sale!! I knew I couldn’t do the cornflower blue, but I loved the gray every bit as much.
I headed over to Macy’s to check her out in person. This Martha Stewart Saybridge Sofa has a 4.5 star review rating on Macy website, but I wanted to sit on it and try her out for myself. Come to find out, the gray color, Storm, was the stock color and only color included in the sale price. I could certainly live with THAT!!
I placed my order for the sofa and love seat and they arrived at our home just 2 days ago. Even my super picky husband loves them! They are wonderfully firm, but comfortable, deep and long, great for when my 6’4″ sweetie wants to nap on them 😉
What I still need to do in this room:
- a new coffee table,
- floor lamp
- I want to get rid of the oak roll-top desk and replace it with either a cabinet or buffet type piece
- TV stand- I’m leaning towards this one from Home Decorators Collection, if we take it out of the corner
- walls – I’m at a loss on what to do with the big wall, but would like a photo gallery of some sort.
- rug? some days I think I want a rug, and other days I love how clean the space is with out one – so not sure on that yet
- accessories
What is staying
- window treatments. Emma Floral curtains are from World Market – I love that they are yellow, brown and gray. Chocolate brown bamboo shades are from Lowes
- oversized chocolate chair and ottoman – we bought this just a year ago at Carol House Furniture in St. Louis, so it’s staying.
- TV
Here’s one view of the space – as you can see, it’s not a very big room, and I’m just not sure what to do next – I would love some suggestions in the comments!!
Where we’ve come from:
Here’s a before shot – you can see more in this post I did way back in 2010 when I stated I wanted a change! lol…..told you I’m SLOW
and this post show’s some of the progress when we got started late last year.
At least I’m slowly getting rid of the dark “country” decor. I love how much difference it’s made already!!
Leave me some suggestions in the comments!!!! I need all the help I can get!
***UPDATE FEB 2016***
We moved in June 2014 you can see the Martha Stewart Saybridge Sofa in our new home
I get a lot of emails asking me how long we’ve had the sofa and how it’s held up.
in Nov 2015 we got new flooring and I wanted a sectional for our family room, so we moved the Martha Stewart Saybridge sofa and loveseat to our finished basement. We have had it almost 3 years and it has held up well, other than the seat cushions on the sofa have gotten lumpy (you can see that in the photo above). Other than that, the fabric and structure has held up very well to daily use.
We now have laminate floors and Macy’s Elliot Sectional Sofa in Vintage

Cheryl — have you said before where you got the All You Need is Love print on the wall…or is that chalkboard art?
I purchased the digital file then had it printed by a local printer http://www.caravanshoppe.com/product/all-you-need-is-love/
I ordered the same sofa! How is the fabric holding up? Does it stretch? I can’t wait for mine to come in,
I’ve only had it a few days 😉
Hey Cheryl and Deneen,
I have been eyeballing this sofa in Storm. I went to Macy’s to see it first hand and it had a green hue in the store and I brought a swatch home and it does look more gray. Can you guys tell me what your thoughts are on this…in the pictures it looks true gray. I can’t have any green.
thanks in advance!
Courtenay
the pictures in this post is how they look, in person – they are gray in my home.
I love how airy and bright it looks in the “after” ohoto! And that gorgeous sofa. Want 😀
I think it looks great! When it comes to redecorating I’m slow too. Money and hubby approval can sure hold up progress!
LOVE the sofa!
Jenna
Wow! Cheryl it’s beautiful! What a change from the before picture. So pretty! I have to say that I am in LOVE with your couch and loveseat! I think you should add another little pop of yellow somewhere even if it’s just one little item or a pillow or something like that. Love the look of the whole room!
I LOVE the gray! The new look is so fresh and pretty! Love your style, Cheryl!
Thanks Sue! I’m still trying to find my style again. After being in the country home décor business for over 10+ years, I’ve been working the last 4 to change my style!!
LOVE the ‘after’! Totally great style. We’re slow too – still getting out list together for new sofa and so on.
what a beautiful makeover, cheryl!! love the couch, such a great piece for a family/living room!
I adore this sofa! And the many different updates you’ve done? Perfection! 🙂
I think it looks great….I am all about a slow makeover so I can find the PERFECT piece….I like your coffee table and I would find some chalk paint (like Annie Sloan) and give it a makeover…..some mismatched knobs and VOILA. 🙂
couch looks great and also wanted to leave a blog about the Marsetti Prize Pack ….. hope I win …great prize try and enter!!!
Love your new sofas. The whole room is looking gorgeous!
Love the sofa! And love the chalk board on top of the sofa as well. Great job!
Thanks for sharing.
Ellya
Gorgeous! I can see why you love them so much. Can’t wait to see the finished room…it already looks so very different. 🙂

Love tithe sofa and the wall color. Love the idea do some more yellow. It is big furniture so I would suggest keeping everything else clean lines. A leggier coffee table, smaller side table. Clear glass lamps with some great shades. Have fun!
I bought the exact same sofa that weekend, too!!!!!! Ours just got delivered almost two weeks ago and I’m in sofa heaven! Isn’t it the best?!?! I too am revamping our family room but so far it’s the only piece I have in it, lol! I think I might kick myself for not purchasing the loveseat as well, but I’m slow when it comes to transformations 🙂 I love the way it looks in your home and I can’t wait to see the finished result! I just purchased a new coffee table and I think it will be perfect…here’s the link…http://www.wisteria.com/Simply-Rustic-Coffee-Table/productinfo/W8752/ I actually found the exact same one on Joss and Main but I think they sold out quick! I just found your sight and I love it! Thanks for the inspiration!
I’m so glad I found this post! I was thinking of ordering this sofa but was hesitant to do so without being able to see it in person first. Your photos are very helpful in making my decision to go for it.
Your living room looks lovely! I’m hosting a new linky party I would love to have you!
Angela
Hey! LOVE THE family room! its very similar to my asthetic and where you are going. One thing I have found i really think works and transitions with my space is a sisal rug (jute, natural fiber) i have found them oversized and lovely making the wood floor pop instead of blend or hidden.
Where/how did you do the love sign above the sofa and can you show a full shot> is it a poster, a canvas WOULD LOVE TO DO THIS!
thanks!
Kerry
Hi Kerry –
I purchased the digital file then had it printed by a local printer http://www.caravanshoppe.com/product/all-you-need-is-love/
I have seen the Saybridge Sofa and love seat in Macy’s and I fell in love with it but I am looking for a different color, I would love for someone to tell me where to go to find this set in other colors because Macy’s doesn’t have them in other colors. I found a website that carried several colors but I forgot which site I was on. Please help before the sale ends, Thank you kindly,
Malal
Love the sofa, is it holding up well?
The Berkline 13201 is a modern, updated home theater seating design, similar to
the Berkline 13200. Of course, it would be the mechanic who
has experience and has been proving the best services. Contemporary furniture is lengthy, flat armrests and has adjustable headrests that
unquestionably render practicality and inclusive usability.
Hello, love your post and sofa! Can you pls share which light gray paint color you used?
Thank U!
I’m thinking about getting this chesterfield from Macy’s. My husband is concerned about the fabric holding up with our kids. How has your held up?
the fabric has held up perfectly – my only issue is, some of the cushions have gotten a little lumpy after 2 years.
I’ve been looking at this couch for about six months ths. I live on an island and we don’t have a macys store. I ordered four different swatches.one of them in the storm color. Some reviews are mixed on the sites to whether it’s true grey or hint of sage? Some review said it was hard to sit on. What is your experience?
Hello there,
Theres a new couch in the last picture, what is this couch? Can you please tell m, im loving it.
Thanks
