Since spring is officially here and we’ve been discussing the inevitable “spring cleaning” season , I thought it would be a good time to talk about carpets!
Several months ago I had the opportunity to visit the Rug Doctor Factory, which just so happens to be right here in St. Louis! Being a mom and family to four dogs, I was ALL over that!
We learned a few eye opening facts about carpets:
- 80 percent of the dirt in your house walks in through the door on people’s feet
- bacteria can live after four weeks on the carpet
- The carpet in your home could be seven times dirtier than a city street
- A carpet that appears beautiful and clean can actually hide as much as a pound of dirt per square yard
- 2,000 dust mites can live on one ounce of carpet dust
Is carpet cleaning on your Spring cleaning list now?
How often do you clean your carpets? If you’re like many people I bet you’re lucky if you clean your carpets once a year, but did you know you should clean your carpets every few months? Not only will it keep your home cleaner, but will extend the life of your carpet.
For most carpets the best cleaning comes from hot-water extraction. It’s the method recommended by most major carpet manufacturers and used by professional carpet cleaning services. Continued, regular deep-cleaning not only removes allergens, dirt, and grime, but can add years of life to your carpet by removing the abrasive grit that harms carpet fibers.
The Rug Doctor is the most popular, convenient, compact and powerful carpet cleaning machine on the market. This power horse uses a vibrating brush instead of a rotating brush, allowing the dirt to break up better and be extracted from the carpet fibers.
During our Rug Doctor tour, we got to try out the machine for ourselves (yes, they got a bunch of bloggers together at The Legends Country Club to clean their carpets for them……how smart was that! HA!)
I’ve rented the machines in the past and love how truly easy they are to maneuver and use! But what I really loved is, The Rug Doctor not only cleans your carpets, but has attachments to clean your upholstered furniture and even the carpet in your car!!
Here I am using the attachable Hand Tool, which is perfect for upholstery, as well as stairs and hard to reach places!
I don’t know about you, but we’ve had our house open for weeks, with all of the beautiful spring weather we’ve been having. But, I’ve also been seeing a lot of yellow pollen on my furniture when I clean, so you know that pollen and other allergens are in the carpet. Rug Doctor has new Anti Allergen Carpet Cleaner. This carpet cleaner helps to provide a healthier home environment, especially for to allergy sufferers, year round! The Anti Allergen Carpet Cleaner uses a unique formulation to help remove and refresh carpet fibers, remove pollen, pet dander and dust mites!
Since we have several fur balls in our house, having a Rug Doctor on hand is a savior for spot cleaning. I’ve been using the Anti-Allergen cleaning formula and our house smells so fresh! My carpet is clean and it’s really motivated me to continue on with spring cleaning the rest of my house!
Rug Doctor can be found in over 30,000 supermarkets, and home improvement centers in the United States. You can rent them for a 24 hour period or longer! We also learned that each Rug Doctor machine in a retail location is 100% maintained and cleaned by Rug Doctor!
So I say, Spring Cleaning is the perfect time to tackle those carpets don’t you? The Rug Doctor website can answer all of your questions and is full of lots of carpet cleaning tips.
Since spring cleaning can be very time consuming and tedious, Rug Doctor has put together a few tips to tackle those chores:
- Make a Checklist: To help get organized, make a checklist of each room in your home and all the items in that room that need to be cleaned or organized, from the ceiling to the floor. No item or area is too small for some TLC. Don’t forget the windows and blinds, light bulbs, ceiling fan, bedding and curtains and even inside appliances, such as refrigerators and ovens.
- Prioritize Your Checklist: Now that you know what needs to be done, what can you accomplish today? Each day will vary depending on your schedule with work, family, but having a list prepared will help keep you on track. Make the most of spring cleaning by not exhausting yourself in the process. If you have two hours to straighten up one day and 20 minutes the next, don’t get discouraged or feel defeated – you’re still making progress!
- Clear the Clutter: Before you begin deep cleaning, remove the clutter and items you don’t use or need any more from rooms, closets and even your garage. This will help you get organized and will make the cleaning process easier once the clutter is no longer around and taking up unnecessary space.
- Organize, Organize, Organize: Along with de-cluttering, remember this is the perfect opportunity to organize the things you are tidying up – especially when it comes to the ‘black holes’ in your home like closets or underneath beds. Ask yourself: “Do I use this item? Do I need this item?” If the answer is “no” to both, it might be a good opportunity to donate the item(s) to charity.
- Stock Your Supplies: Take an inventory of your cleaning supplies and do some shopping to stock up on all the items you need to have on hand. While you make your shopping list, think about all the various surfaces in your house and needed products for fabrics, furniture, counter-tops, glass and tile, as well as the tools you need to do the scrubbing, such as paper towels, sponges and brushes.
- Family Fun: Cleaning the entire house can be difficult and take a long time if you’re trying to do it on your own. Get your family involved in the process by assigning people to different rooms or particular tasks. Don’t forget to reward your fellow cleaners after all of their hard work.
- Deep Clean Carpets: Carpet that appears clean can hide as much as a pound of dirt per square yard. If you haven’t deep cleaned your carpets recently, this is the perfect time to do so. Rug Doctor machines and products are easy to use and can be picked up at your local supermarket or home improvement store. Use our simple online Cost Savings Calculator to determine the products that are best for your cleaning needs.

I clean my carpets every few months. My dog feels like it’s necessary. It’s been about two months. I’m due.
I really do not know when the carpet was cleaned last.
We have been in our home for 9 years and I haven’t “cleaned” the
carpets for several years…I do sweep them a lot, but I know how
much stays in the carpet. I once read that carpets weigh at least
30 lbs. more when they are taken out of a home…
Many thanks, Cindi
I TRIED to clean my carpet before Christmas but to no avail! We have Berber carpet and it is a pain to keep clean with three kids and a husband that brings his grass/dirt in every time he walks thru the door (he does landscaping on the side and is a mechanic by day–double yuck on his feet!!) It would be awesome to have a deep cleaner to use on a regular basis! Love your blog Cheryl!!
I bought a Groupon and had several rooms cleaned at Christmas–but not all of them! I SO need to steam clean on a monthly basis–we have terrible carpet–2 dogs and 2 kids!
OMG….I could have kicked myself for selling my machine a year ago all because I had hardwood floors. I moved into my beautiful new place and unfortuantely after the first few days I knew I missed my Rug Doctor more than anyone could ever imagine. I am a firm believer that carpets are the most important part of keeping your home clean especially when pets are a part of your indoor family as well. Bring me back my Rug Doctor PLEASE! LOL

Wow! It’s been a while! ..almost 2 years I guess!! I have to borrow my grandmas shampooer, so this would be wonderful!!!
Um. I don’t know when I cleaned them last. Last summer maybe? I can tell you I rented a rug doctor (even though we had a bissel, it just dosent work as well) from the store down the street! It was so easy to use and I had planned on doing it again last week until I came down with some cold.
We constantly spot treat our carpet, as, I was silly when we remodeled the house and decided on white carpet. I haven’t shampooed in a long time, as, I’ve seen the rug doctor machines in the stores and they are not well taken care of. I’ve had discussions with friends and family to purchase one together and share it, but, it would be GREAT to win one! 🙂 Thanks for the opportunity!
I cleaned my carpets just this past weekend! Rented a Rug Doctor at the grocery store on Saturday and I loved it!

I just moved in to our new place 7 months ago and have not cleaned the carpets yet here but I did clean the carpets and the apartment I was living in before I moved…
We’ve cleaned our carpets twice in a year and a half, once with the rug doctor and once with a friends cheaper store bought model! The Rug Doctor definitely did a superior job.
Stanley Steamer just called me the other day to say that they had not cleaned my carpets since August 2011. So it has been awhile! And I LIKE Tidymom and Rug Doctor on Facebook!
I cleaned my carpets about a year ago.

We remodeled our house close to 2 years ago and put in brand new carpet. We have yet to clean our carpet but trust me, it’s on the to-do list! We really could use a Rug Doctor with 2 dogs in the house!!
I really enjoy getting your emails and I just started following you on Pinterest! Can’t wait to see all the good tips you have!
I’ve always wanted a Rug Doctor! I do have a Hoover steamer and used it within the last 2 years. It’s on my list of things to do before Abby’s party in May.
One of my favorite products ever is Rug Doctor’s Pet & Urine Eliminator. One of our cats (that passed away a few years ago) had problems with cystitis. She would dribble here and there. The Rug Doctor product was the ONLY thing to get it out. I’m not sure if you remember my post about her peeing through the cage in our car on the way to the vet? It soaked through the seat even. I called all kinds of people for help, even crime scene clean up people and no one could help us. The car smelled awful! Well, finally a guy at a car detail place suggested the Pet & Urine Eliminator. I pretty much dumped 3 bottles on the seat and floor mats and used a box fan to dry it.
It worked! Seriously, we almost sold that car. If they would have had the one I wanted at the dealer that night, we would have done it. Luckily, the Rug Doctor worked and my car still smells clean 3 years later.

Um, do I even admit this? I have never cleaned my carpets. I was JUST telling my hubs that we needed to get the carpets clean. This would be perfect to help me keep the allergens at bay for two of my babies.
I’m trying to understand why anyone would ever put white carpet in a house… Really!? We had good intentions of ripping the 12 year old white carpet out of our house when we bought it since it was actually brownish mostly and the previous owners had 5 dogs but…. Life happens. Five kids, busy schedules, kids graduating, college tuitions and carpets had to stay. So I had them cleaned when we first moved in 4 years ago but got scammed and it was worse when they were done. So I kept holding out for new hardwood but it’s not coming anytime soon. I would love love love to win this so I can get my carpets nice and clean before we have another graduation party in June. That would be awesome! Just do if myself!!
