Tooth Fairy Traditions

There is one thing we ALL have in common……….we all lose our baby teeth. And most all of us remember the excitement and mystery of visits from the tooth fairy.
The tooth fairy is a tradition that has stood the test of time with so many great customs from trailing fairy dust, to miniature doors and tooth-shaped pillows to special coins or just good ole hard cash … all for the magical fairy in exchange for the pearly whites.
Your little one is in bed with a shiny, baby tooth under the pillow — now what? Here are some fun ideas to make a visit from the Tooth Fairy a special event!
Special Tooth Fairy Door
my life my loves and nest of posies
This has to be one of my favorite ideas! How whimsical and cute for the tooth fairy to have her own door right next to your child’s bed.
Magic Fairy Dust and Gold Coins
Most fairies leave a trail of glittery fairy dust, and how about leaving a special gold coin instead of a dollar bill?
Tooth Fairy Pocket
You can make a special tooth pocket to celebrate the momentous moment and place the tooth under the pillow with out fear of losing it……….leaving the perfect spot for the tooth fairy to deposit her memento. Download the free template to make a tooth fairy pocket
Tooth Fairy Pillow
I love this cute little DIY Tooth Pillow craft. This makes it much easier for the Fairy to find the tooth instead of having to sneak under a pillow and risk rousing a sleeping little one.
Glittered Tooth Fairy Money
Money is glitter sprayed dollar bills from the Tooth Fairy!
Tooth Fairy Printables
Emergency Tooth Fair kit printable – from Hello Bee
FREE Printable Tooth Fairy Notes from Handmade Charlotte (including a tiny pocket for the tooth as well as a tiny envelope for a tiny letter written by the toothless child to the Fairy).
Tooth Fairy Receipt from Oh My Gluestick
Here are some healthy reminders about taking care of your teeth
- Brush at least twice a day
- Brush all of your teeth, not just the front ones
- Take your time while brushing
- Be sure your toothbrush has soft bristles
- Learn how to floss your teeth, and floss every day
Magical moments are what childhood is all about! I’d love to hear about some of your tooth fairy traditions

My daughter has a little toothfairy pillow that has a place to put her tooth. She sits it on the bookshelf next to her bed and in the morning, the toothfairy leaves her a dollar and a note (on paper shaped like a tooth of course) explaining how she took the tooth to place it in the “Hall of Perfect Teeth.”
The toothfairy leaves a golden dollar everytime she comes and sometimes a note, depending upon if the child writes a note to her, and the first tooth along with the golden coin gets several dollars to buy a special toothbrush and paste, and tons of glitter everywhere every time she comes, my 3rd child will be loosing her first tooth soon, we are anxiously awaiting for that special day(-:
I joined Tidy Mom on Facebook. BTW … I am SO getting a toothfairy door. 🙂
I just remember putting the tooth under my pillow and falling a sleep waiting and hoping to see her come in with her magical self. 🙂 I have a 3 year old grandson (my first) and appreciate the ideas and tips. TY

I remember losing my tooth and being so excited to get something for it… it was like Christmas! I was so happy when I woke up the next day with a dollar under my pillow 🙂 Gotta love moms!!
I collected gems as a kid and my mom always gave me a pretty gem instead of money (I think I got the short end of the deal as she wasn’t putting diamonds under there!)

We would always get money, like a quarter or 50 cent piece and a cookie
This is going to sound so snotty but my parents were divorced when I was growing up and when I would lose a tooth I would always go spend the night with my dad because the tooth fairy left more money over there lol!
we would usually get money. a quarter in the early days but eventually a WHOLE DOLLAR!

Long live the tooth fairy.
I saved all my baby teeth in a pill bottle. After 25 years had to throw them away.
My memory of the tooth fairy was getting MONEY! I couldn’t wait for that tooth to come out!
My brother in law and sister in law gave my daughter a tooth fairy kit one year. It had a book about how the tooth fairy came to be and the need to take care of your teeth. It also had a little pouch for the tooth and a little light to guide the tooth fairy. It is a cute little set and my daughter has used it for her lost teeth.
Coming from a big family my mom always wanted to make things special. She would make a big deal out of loosing a tooth. She would leave us a few quarters under our pillow.
I knew there was no tooth fairy for years, but I let my Mom think I did so I’d get money. She finally figured it out when I was about 10!

I remember checking my pillow in the mornings and being so excited! Recently, I remember rushing in kiddo’s room in the morning, hoping he hadn’t woken up yet because the tooth fairy had forgotten! 😉
I remember waking to find my mom tiptoeing around my bed. Her excuse was she was just checking to see if the tooth fairy had come yet.

Instead of money we give our girls real gemstones. You can get them in big lots on ebay and they are not very expensive (they are imperfect, although nobody can tell). To get a dollar is good, but to get a ruby is magical 🙂

I remember the tooth fairy paying more for teeth as I got older and lost more. I guess even the tooth fairy suffered inflation, lol.

My kids are now grown, but many times the “tooth fairy” forgot to visit. She must have had a very busy nite and just did not make it to our house. So, we would try again the next night. As long as the money appeared the 2nd night, everyone was happy. You know, that tooth fairy has a very busy schedule!
My girls receive a pearl for their tooth, which we proudly string onto their necklace. By the time they are grown, they will have a real pearl necklace to wear on their wedding day.

I remember the usual, put tooth under pillow, sleep, wake up with dollar bill there!
We adopted our daughter long past the time we could have played tooth fairies, but we plan to adopt again and at a younger age next time! So, until we are blessed with the next little one, I get to imagine and plan all the things I want to do! So, that being said, I want to make a fairy doorway for my kids to put the tooth on, then leave a gold dollar and some ‘fairy dust’ strategically placed that will have fallen off her wand! I can’t wait to have little ones!!!
I remember trying to get that loose tooth to come out, working back and forth, but always too scared to pull it when it was just barely hanging on. I always rolled over and checked my pillow to see if there was any money left. It was so sad the day my parents forgot and dad just handed me a dollar bill. I love these ideas you have, my son is 3 and will start losing his teeth in a couple of years, so I can plan! Thank you for the inspriation!
I always got a dollar in quarters from the tooth fairy.
These ideas are great! I also love Larissa from mmmcrafts…her tooth pillow is so cute!! http://mmmcrafts.blogspot.com/2009/02/tooth-pillow-revisited.html

Thanks!
All I really remember is getting money under my pillow. Probably only a qtr. way back then. I always left money under my kids pillows for their teeth. Was always afraid I would forget to take care of that after they were asleep.
I subscribe to your emails.
my parents always left us $1 for each tooth. i think the price has since been increased for kids today 🙂
