Patriotic Frames & Printables

One of the best parts of summer here in the USA is the Fourth of July! Am I right? All of the red, white and blue colors, the food, the parties, and…….. the fireworks. To help us all prep for this patriotic of holidays, 100 other bloggers and myself are giving a cheer for the red, white and blue today!! You’ll find over 100 patriotic crafts, recipes, printables, decor and more!!
When Abbey of The Cards We Drew, asked if I wanted to be a part of the patriotic celebration I knew it would be the perfect time to make some Patriotic Frames to fill with a few Patriotic Printables……and the best part is …….YOU will have the chance to win $100 worth of Cut it Out Frames! So you can make your own frames (they don’t have to be patriotic)!
First, let’s take a look at how easy it is to make these fun frames with scrapbook paper and Mod Podge and a few of my favorite Cut it Out Frames
Mod Podge Patriotic Picture Frames Tutorial using Cut It Out Frames
Supplies:
- Cut it Out Wood Frames Frames
- Patriotic Scrapbook paper (1 sheet per frame)
- paint (color that coordinates with scrapbook paper)
- Mod Podge
- Stain or Ink
- sand paper
- sponge applicator/brush (one for each paint color and one for the Mod Podge)
- Exacto knife
- Scissors
- pen or pencil
- soft cloth or paper towel (not pictured)
Instructions:
1. Lay a piece of scrapbook paper face down on a cutting surface, place unfinished wood frame face down on top of paper, and trace frame shape onto back side of paper.
2. Use scissors to cut out frame shape. Remove cardboard insert from frame and use exato knife to cut out frame opening. (repeat for each frame)
3. Paint frames. Be sure to paint the inside and outside edges as well. Let the paint dry.
4. After paint has dried, use sponge brush to cover the front surface of the frame with a layer of Mod Podge.
5. Place cut out scrapbook paper on top, making sure to smooth out any bubbles. Set aside to dry.
6. Use sandpaper to smooth out all of the sides/edges of the paper. For the inside corners I fold my sandpaper and rub up and down to get the corners sanded. It’s ok if you sand off a little of the paper, this will give it a distressed look.
7. Dab soft cloth (or paper towel) with ink or stain, and gently run over edges of paper and frame.
8. The final step, cover your frame, including sides, with 2 layers of Mod Podge. Let it dry about 10-15 mins. between each coat.
Once frames have dried, insert your favorite pictures or printable.

There are so many great things you can do with these beautiful frames! They come unfinished, which is perfect, because it allows you to get the exact look you want! They are made out of MDF so they are very easy to paint! I’ll be sharing what I’ve done with a few more of these frames in the next few weeks! I would make a wall of my past class group pictures at school……for years i have been wanting to get this done.
I am trying to re-do my craft room. I love to print out all the cute sayings I see on sights. But don’t have any framed. These would look great done in the colors of my room to high-light all the printables I have.

i love these frames! i always decorate for every holiday, but especially for 4th of july, memorial day, and veterans day because my husband is in the service. this year i bought frames at the dollar tree (always trying to keep the craft cost to a minimum) and painted them and put either patriotic scrapbook paper or photos of my husband and the rest of his team in them, but i never thought of covering the frames with the scrapbook paper – genius! (and admittedly, much cuter than my plain red, white, and blue frames) for veterans day, i plan on doing a gallery wall that goes up my hallway/staircase full of pictures of all the veterans we’ve come to know and love over the years, and i’m definitely going to use this idea – thanks!

This tutorial is awesome! I just bought some scrapbook paper and a wood block in similar shape to this frame used. I did just about all the same steps. Wasn’t sure if there was a little bit easier of a way to do the cutting for a better fit but seeing this I guess that why we have the sandpaper for. Thanks for a great tutorial. Can’t wait to get started on some more of these. Would love to try it with some frames.
