I recently shared with you that Cullen is a Pedigree Ambassador. He’s actually been a self-proclaimed Pedigree Ambassador for a long time since it’s basically the only food he’s ever eaten in his two and a half years!- He loves it! But let’s face it, even furry four-legged friends enjoy “treats” every now and then.
Since Yorkies are known for bad teeth, I give Cullen a Pedigree Dental Chew daily…it’s his special treat when I leave the house. He can tell when I’m gathering my stuff up to walk out the door….he runs to the cabinet waiting for his treat! lol…..I love how intuitive he is.
Between the Pedigree Dry Dog food and the Dental Chews our vet was rather impressed with Cullen’s teeth.
There are several other times during the day I like to give him an extra “snack”……don’t judge lol…. my husband and I are the kind of pathetic people who will talk about our dog all day lol….our girls are even jealous of him, they think he gets too much attention and is treated better than they are! haha
Today……….Cullen is here to share a recipe with y’all!! I say these homemade dog treats are easy, healthy, and natural…..Cullen says they are crunchy and taste great!
So far, all 4 of our dogs have tried them, and let’s just say, there has been a lot of jumping in the air and begging. They’re so easy to make I’m thinking of making a few more batches, dropping them in cellophane bags with ribbon, and taking them up to our Humane Society.
My friend Nancy of The Sensitive Pantry, shared this gluten-free recipe with me a few months ago. My only regret is, that I didn’t try it sooner.
Peanut Butter & Bacon Dog Treats {Gluten-Free}
Ingredients
- 1 cup oat flour (you can just whip up your own by grinding up rolled oats)
- 1 cup brown rice flour (or you can substitute regular or whole wheat flour)
- 1/2 cup peanut butter (unsalted is best)
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup water
- 2-3 pieces cooked bacon
- 1 shredded carrot
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°. In a medium bowl combine all wet ingredients until well blended. Add both flours to wet mixture to form dough.
- Roll out between two pieces of parchment paper or lightly floured work surface to 1/4 inch thick.
- Cut out with cookie cutter. (I used a dog bone shape cookie cutter)
- Place treats on a parchment lined baking sheet (they can be close together, just not touching) and bake for 20-25 minutes.
- Cool in oven, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Store about a weeks worth on the counter in a sealed container and the rest can go in the freezer.
“I wrote this review while participating in an Ambassador campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Pedigree and received dog food to facilitate my reviews and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate. All opinions and love for Pedigree dog food are all mine and Cullen’s”

Cullen is so cute! Those treats would be great for Christmas presents for dog owners. …..filing away for December….
now that is one cute dog!! i’m a softie too when it comes to our pets – The Prof is much more stern about not giving the cats people food but i’ll sneak a kernel of popcorn or a lick of ice cream to them when he’s not looking . . .
So precious! I think my Jake would love these.
He is the cutest little pumpkin dog ever. Love this!!
These are some mighty good looking dog treats, Cheryl! I know Yellowdog will be thanking Cullen for the recipe 🙂
Lucky little guy to have his very own homemade gluten-free treats! You know take out the bacon and I bet these would make tasty human treats too.
I wish I had a puppy to make these for, but you’ve inspired me. I’ll make them for the humane society down the road! Thanks for the idea, Cheryl!
What a cutie!! I’m all for making homemade dog treats (I only did that once – it made so many, they wouldn’t keep long enough to go through them and I just haven’t done it again yet), but the bacon makes me nervous in this recipe. I’ve always been told that bacon, onions, and chocolate are the three NEVERs when it comes to doggie consumption??
Must admit one of our family dogs stole a Valentine’s Day box of chocolates one year, ate the whole thing and after bouncing off the walls all night was fine the next day, but still… Your “kids” didn’t have any issues from the bacon??
I have never heard of bacon being an issue with dogs. You can buy bacon treats for them.
My guess would be large quantities may not be good because of the fat and salt.
And for the chocolate:
The truth is chocolate contains theobromine that is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. This is a xanthine compound in the same family of caffeine, and theophylline.
Toxic Levels
The good news is that it takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine 100-150 mg/kg to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size and chocolate concentration.
On average,
Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz.
Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz.
Baker’s chocolate 390mg/oz.
Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as:
1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate
1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate
1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker’s chocolate.
So, for example, 2 oz. of Baker’s chocolate can cause great risk to an 15 lb. dog. Yet, 2 oz. of Milk chocolate usually will only cause digestive problems.
So that too….is really a moderation issue.
But if you feel uncomfortable with the bacon, just leave it out. {wink}
here’s a site with a list of what’s toxic to dogs

I have used carob chips in the ones I make and they love the peanutbutter honey ones
We don’t have a dog but I do have a dog bone cookie cutter somewhere. Hmmm, maybe I need to make some treats for the dogs of friends!
Love your dog! LOL! I want a little dog so bad. Maybe someday:-)
Yeah!
These are GREAT!
And glutten~free!
Sometimes I worry if Doogan is slightly allergic to wheat…so this is PERFECT!
Thanking you for this recipe!
I’ve been looking for a doggie treat recipe!
Those treats look about as BIG as Cullen!
What a handsome BOY he is!
He and Doogan would have a BALL!
Please fly him to spend a weekend with us.
Since he’s a celebrity AMBASSADOR he might could fly free! ;o)
Love that boy!
LOVE the recipe!
LOVE you too!
Doogan sends Cullen HAPPY wags!
xo
Cullen did a great job on posing with the treats lol. Mine would have either snatched them up and run away or gave the “why do you do this to me” pitiful eye look and cried lol
He’s actually been taught not to take food off a plate………so he didn’t even want to LOOK at them! Haha…….I had to keep scooting the plate toward him
I think I’m most impressed he was able to have treats sitting in front of him and didn’t just take off with them! My furry little princess would have been gone as soon as that plate was low enough she could grab ’em.
He’s been taught not to take food off a plate, so he was afraid to even look at it actually! Haha….took me forever to get a shot with them sitting in front of him. He would either move or not look that direction! Was really funny!
I’ve been searching for a good doggie treat recipe- these look perfect! And your pup is such a cutie, what a fun post!
After getting a whiff of my dog’s breath, I should probably feed her some of these biscuits…
My Border Collie would LOVE these!! I think every doggie would! Great recipe! Thanks!
What a sweet puppy! My kids would love him to death. They are BEGGING for a dog, but I’m not ready for another “baby.”
Love!!! And the photos are out of this world. I feel your girls pain. My dad has more pictures of my brother Junior on his Facebookpage than of me or the grandkids! I will definitely be sharing this and trying it!!! Ps-Cullen is a good dog!!!
Great post! I love making doggie treats for my golden Riley; he just loves them. Cullen is such a cutie!!
Cullen may just be one of the most beautiful pups I’ve ever seen and these treats look like doggy bone perfection!
I’m going to love Cullen’s stint as a Pedigree Ambassador. These photos of *his* treats and of him are just to sweet. Makes me want to just pick him up and hug him. What a beautiful little dog he is. (The recipe for the treats is great too btw!)
That Cullen is a Q-T pie! I bet that my Oakley would go bonkers over these!
Fabulous Cheryl!! I have to say these look & sounds really good for anyone….brown rice flour has become one of my favorites lately. Glad to know the pups like it too 😉 xo
Cullen is such a sweetie! What a great idea to bag up those scrummy looking treats and send them off to the Humane Society!
Oh, my daughter has been experimenting with making doggy treats. I’ll have to show her this recipe as she prefers the kind you can roll out and cut into dog bone shapes. Thanks for sharing.
Hi!! I found this recipe off Foodgawker!! I love it. My Boston Terrier is going to be in HEAVEN!!! our kids are a bit jealous of our k 9 kid also… he’s the best kid in the house!! LOL
Cullen’s a lucky pup!
Adorable! I imagined the thought bubble over his head…”hurry up and take the dang pictures, mom – I want a cookie NOW.”
My pup just told me to make these for him. And he wants to know if your dog can come over to play. He also said to bring the treats! 😉
thanks for the recipe. I make biscuits every now and then, but always enjoy a new one! The biscuits I make are completely human consumable too. I usually have to keep my daughter from “quality control”. I bought a book specifically written for dog biscuits. It has easy recipes and harder ones. Some for older dogs or those missing teeth that are softer and easier to chew. My dogs favorite is a garlic/cheese biscuit. It smells SO good when it bakes!
I think the controversy over the bacon is that it’s pork. We’ve been told for years not to feed dogs pork for fear they will get worms. I think the ban has been lifted, but it’s one of those things, I haven’t done it on my other dogs, so I’m not going to start now. We don’t even eat pork bacon or breakfast sausage. Always turkey! But I wouldn’t indulge the dog using my good turkey bacon in her biscuits, sorry! Let me know if you’d like a recipe or two or just the name of the book, it came with 3 different sized cutters too!

We just got our dog on Easter. He is a 8 month old Amstaff. He is the sweetest things and he loves his treats! I have been wanting to make him some homemade treats but I have yet to get a dog treat shaped cookie cutter =) We also feed him all natural dog food (Blue Buffalo) so I am really excited to give him some treats that are equally healthy. Thanks so much for sharing!
Great recipe for dog teats. How do tou store them and how well do they store? Love yorkies, Cullen is adorable. I have a Bichon Frise I’m sure will love these.
Thanks.
What a cutie pie!!
I have a little wiener dog/chihuahua mix who is about 7 or 8 years old named Roxy. I say about 7 or 8 because I adopted her from the Humane Society when she was a few years old. She had lived with a very old man who had passed away…she was so stressed out at the shelter with all the dogs barking and being in a cage that she wouldn’t eat…she was skin and bones! So of course, I had to bring her home.
My husband had told me I could have any dog I wanted as long as it wasn’t a wiener dog or a chihuahua….but TECHNICALLY since she was a mix….
Ha Ha
I always say I am going to make these for the dog- still saying it! Lucky he gets treats everytime we go to the bank! Karen from Workshop Wednesday and shared it!
OK I just made these and let them cool. All votes are in (my 2 little doggies). They are a winner!!!!! My dogs wont eat nothing but PuP or ronies. Finally something good for them. And cheaper…
After these are baked cant they be left out longer than 3 days?? I mean after all cookies are out longer.
Thank you sooo much Cullen..arf,arf
Debbie
oh my yes I can see how any dog including my corky would love them
Your dog is so beautiful! 🙂 Thanks for sharing this recipe, I”m sure my pup would love some of these sweet treats!
I think my Maggie, a SC Wheaten Terrier, would love these. She has so many allergies and I’ve already taken the rest of the house gluten free. Never thought about the dog. 🙂
Looking forward to making these yummies for our little pug Stormy. Our daughter is gluten free and is not supposed to get licked by dogs unless they are too!!! One caution, oats contain gluten unless the package is marked gluten free. Unfortunately they are grown in ffields near wheat and are cross contaminated…so something like Bob’s Gluten Free Oats would be perfect.(also great for granola) Yum!! Thanks(Rye, Oats, wheat, barley are the 4 main no-no’s)
These are easy and fun to make! I used a little bit of molasses too. I recommend making sure you shred the carrots into bits so the treats won’t be hard to cut after you roll them out. I made the mistake of peeling them instead of chopping the carrots. Also, I used a cute squirrel cut out instead of a dog bone! Hilarious. Thank you for the recipe.
I love your HEALTHY recipe but I am confused about something. You make these healthy treats for your dog but feed Pedigree dog food. Are they paying you or something?? You would be wise to check the ingredients as you are actually feeding your cute dog a VERY poor diet! Ground corn, corn gluten meal, ANIMAL fat (from what animal???, if they don’t list it RUN for the hills!! This could include dead cats and dogs. If they don’t list what animal the fat came from you should be worried) chicken BI-PRODUCT meal (lips, beaks, tongues, feet & eyes… NO ACTUAL CHICKEN MEAT) Bottom line is… you are paying for a bunch of fillers and no real meat at all!! I don’t mean to sound cruel.. just pointing out the facts. Please everyone… do your research on your pets food!
We have been married 25 years and have pretty much at all times have owned 3-4 dogs at a time. All have been fed Pedigree for most of their lives, and they have all lived healthy happy lives. It’s just like people……I’m sure it would be much healthier for me if I ate all organic food, and never at fast food…..but I don’t.
We treat our dogs the best we can afford and lots of love. We actually have one dog who moved out with our oldest when she moved out, and the dog started having seizures a few weeks after they moved out. She couldn’t stay on anti seizure meds because they caused too much trouble with her kidneys (or maybe it was liver)….so I did some research and found out it could be diet related. So my daughter was buying her good food from a local vet who sells specialty and organic dog foods. But the seizures continued (several seizures a week)……..our daughter then moved back home and because we have other dogs and we don’t keep their food separate, Pepper was once again eating Pedigree (when my daughter moved out she was buying another grocery store dog food for several months)……..no joke, with in one week of Pepper being back on Pedigree, the seizures stopped. In the last 2 years since she has been back in our house she has had 2 seizure. Our vet was dumbfounded. She had been having 3-5 seizure a WEEK! We don’t know what it was, but Pepper is now fed nothing but Pedigree. No table scraps, no home made treats, nothing but pedigree and our Vet agrees, it’s the only common denominator we can find and it’s working.
I love this recipe, Cheryl! I cannot wait to try it for our new baby. Everything tastes better with bacon!
Do you have to use only oat flour? Can I just use all brown rice flour?
I am sure that my mom and mother-in-law’s dogs would love me even more if I made these. I’ve made pumpkin with parsley one’s and they go crazy. Thanks for sharing. I’m always looking for a good doggy treat. 🙂
Love the recipes! We made them a couple times and our dogs can’t resist. We either buy our treats at organic pet boutique or we make these yummy recipes! Thanks for sharing we will be back to check out more!
This is for mummy daddy dogs LOL. Hound dogs will not like this. But this can be offered on many occasions. From where I can buy the plate of the biscuit shape.
Tried this recipe tonight (with a few adjustments) and the dogs loved it! They chose it over the treats that they have been already getting. Even Theo (my fostered mongrel) who isn’t too crazy about treats, woke up and begged for seconds after he had a whiff of what Moxie was getting.
Next weekend, I’ll try to substitute bacon with boiled chicken meat and boiled chicken liver.
How long can they go without refrigeration? I’d like to make a batch and send to someone in another state. Ideally, I’d make them the night before and refrigerate and then ship 2-3 day mail.
I’d make sure the treats would be refrigerated or put in the freezer when the arrived at their destination.
Thanks.
The recipe doesn’t call for refrigeration – it says they can remain on the counter in an air tight container
I made these today and used a smaller dog bone cookie cutter, so the recipe made at least 3 dozen. I taste-tested these on my neighbor’s dog, and she LOVED them. She was so excited that she jumped up and gave me many kisses.
I am so excited to make these for my puppy. I treated her to some gourmet dog treats from a local shop the other day and she went crazy for them. Now she just sniffs her other treats with disdain.
My only question is about the oat flour. You said you could make your own by grinding rolled oats. Do they need to be a certain kind? I have a container of Quaker quick oats in my pantry left over from a (human) cookie recipe. Will those work?
I think that would be fine – certainly can’t hurt 😉
Hi,
Can I use wheat germ in place of the brown rice flour? Thank-you
