Decorating a shared home office can be both functional and beautiful!! Not only does the space need to work for both me and my husband, it needs to be a place that makes us happy! I’m thrilled that I was able to make it happen with a colorful industrial style.
I can’t believe it’s done!! Sometimes I have to pinch myself that THIS is my office!!
There’s something you may not know about me; I’m indecisive and a bit of a perfectionist.
That makes decorating a room in our home a loooong process. This office was actually 2 years in the making!! ha! But’s it’s done and I couldn’t be more happy with how it turned out!!
It all started just over two years ago when we had most of the carpet replaced with handscraped wood plank laminate (I’ll do a post on our floors sometime soon too). With my pretty new floors in the office, I knew it was time to make it a space that I love to be in, since I spend most of my time in there.
My husband has his own business, and while he doesn’t use the office all day like I do, he does need his own desk and space for his business. So today I’m excited to show you how I came up with a way to decorate our shared home office that makes both of us happy! Ok, let’s be honest, Steve didn’t really care how I decorated, but preferred that I keep the pink to my side of the room 😉

The room is not big if I recall, it’s only about 100 sq. feet. I used my wide angle lens for a lot of the pictures, so you could get a good feel for the layout of the shared home office space.

Decorating a Shared Home Office for Him and Her
Let’s start with my side of the shared home office and we’ll make our way around the room. I’ll provide links to sources at the end of the post.
Her Side
When you walk into the office, you are looking right at my desk. Ideally, I would like to be facing the window, it just felt awkward to have my back to the door.
Cullen has claimed the window spot anyway…….if I’m in the office, chance are, he’s in this chair either napping or watching out the window.
Spinning around to the backside of my desk is my “workstation”. Originally I purchased the 2 desks to give Steve one, but as soon as they arrived, I knew I needed both of them and love this setup.
I’m pretty excited about the open shelves right behind me. They are from IKEA and I painted the brackets gold.
I love that my cameras and lenses become part of the decor too.
White and gold clipboards became the perfect way to display art than can easily be swapped out when I want. I fell in love with the vintage camera watercolor from Maria Ahrens It really deserves to be in a frame!
To the right of my desk is a giant dry erase board that I picked up at Hobby Lobby. I’m a visual person and use this to keep track of client work and when things are due and scheduled to post. The board is also magnetic, so I use it to hang things I need to keep front and center, reminders, pictures and things I love.
The rug is from World Market, and does a great job of defining my space from his space 😉
I found these little game blocks at an antique shop, I was excited to find all the letters to spell out TidyMom for my desk 😉
The bookcase is from IKEA, but I swapped out the knobs with some pretty gold pulls. I want to line the back of the hutch with a pretty paper some day but just haven’t gotten around to it yet.
I love the whimsy the curtains bring to the space. I also replaced the old mini blinds with 2″ wood blinds with cordless lift and lock from SelectBlinds. It’s crazy how much impact new window treatments can have!
The bookcase is decorated with things I had around the house……and I love how it turned out. Those green cake stands (a Costco find several years ago) pick up the mint green in the file cabinet under my desk perfectly.
His Side
The industrial style black desk is actually an old metal desk Steve brought home years ago when a customer of his was giving it away to anyone who would take it!
Honestly, I hated the thing, and planned on replacing it eventually. But as our shared home office started to come together with my metal desks and file cabinets from CB2, I started to love his old black metal desk! Go figure!! lol
I think the addition of the giant Stendig calendar over the desk is the “wow” factor for his side of the office. This is the third year we’ve had one of these calendars, and I still love the look it gives. It’s like a giant piece of art.
Since I’m a big coffee drinker, a coffee cart in the office was something I was super excited about!
I already had the gold bar cart, and my white Keurig fit and matched perfectly. I hope to replace it with a Nespresso that is on my birthday wishlist.
We are BIG fans of the FRIENDS tv show, so when I saw these Friends printables on etsy I didn’t hesitate to click and print!!
To the left of Steve’s desk is the closet. It’s filled with shelves for storage (nothing pretty).
I picked up some metal letters at Michaels a few years ago, and painted them gold and love how they look over the closet!
Here’s one final look coming in from the door. I’m still on the lookout for a new ceiling fan light.
I sure love how our shared home office turned out!!

I will definitely email you a final look when it’s done in a few months. Thank you so much!! <3 <3 You better believe when I blog about our finished office I'll be giving you all the design credit!
Can’t wait to see your space!!
I mistakenly replied to the wrong person earlier. Sorry ! I wanted to tell you how much I love your shared office! What is the color on the walls?
Great office!! I’m in the process of turning a tiny room into a shared office too! Great ideas here! Thanks for sharing ❤️
Hello !! LOVE your shared office. Duplicating it in our home ! What is the color on the walls?
Thanks so much! I’m afraid I don’t have the color of the paint for that room, it was some left over paint from our old house that I used it the office quickly before moving in because the room had pink walls 😉
Thanks for this post. I, too, am trying to pull together shared office space with my husband. Quite a challenge! I checked the CB2 file cabinets, but the color is teal. Looks like yours is more mint, which I love. I’ll keep looking! Any ideas?
You are correct, mine is a mint green. I bought my file cabinet a few years ago, I think they periodically change up the colors they offer
Sharing an office space can be a challenge, as many of us learned over the past two years! You’ve done a good job compiling tips on how to make it work. Great ideas!
