By keeping up with these daily cleaning routines, my house stays clean enough most of the time, and keeps me from feeling overwhelmed.
Don’t you love that moment when you can sit back in a comfy chair, look around at your sparkling clean house and breath a sigh of relief?
Over the next few weeks I’m going to share how to get there without the long hours and scrubathons.
There are simple steps you can do daily, weekly, monthly and yearly to keep your home {close} to spotless.
The more often you clean, the less build up you’ll have, and the faster you’ll be able to clean the next time.
So for Week one in Countdown to Clean we’re going to cover what you can do daily.
Daily Cleaning {30 minutes a day}
- Morning Routine: Having a morning routine can make a big difference in how your day goes. This involves making the beds, pick up dirty laundry, toss in a load of laundry, empty dishwasher, get dressed.
- Clean Sinks: Wipe dirty counters and sinks in bathroom and kitchen with all-purpose cleaner. A clean bathroom counter and kitchen sink can do wonders for how your house feels. It also keeps me from letting dirty dishes pile up.
- Clean Sweep: Sweep the kitchen floor and do a quick room-by-room pickup, putting items back in their place. Some days you may just need 10 min, other days you may need an hour, but it’s something you should not skip. Get the whole family to help, assign everyone a room, make it a game, see who can get done first.
- Nightly Routine: Don’t go to bed with dishes in the sink. Try doing dinner dishes as soon as dinner is over, then before bed, load any stray glasses or dishes, wipe the counters and sink down and run the dish washer. It’s amazing how good it feels to wake up to a clean kitchen.
By keeping up with these daily routines, my house stays “clean enough” most of the time, and keeps me from feeling overwhelmed. If I let these go, things can quickly spiral out of control.
Next week I’ll share my weekly cleaning routine that helps shine things up!
I’d love to hear what routines and tips work for you!

I kind of hesitated clicking on this post, haha. I was afraid it would motivate me to clean. Sure enough , it did. These are really good tips to live by. I always try to do the same. But, sometimes- I just don’t wanna!!
Great tips Cheryl – I agree, staying on top of the mess is a good thing (although I’m not always good at doing that!).
I totally agree with all of your tips. Clean house = happy momma = happy family. 🙂
Love all these tips!! And you are totally right. Staying on top of it is so important.
Fly Lady also helps a lot. I use her site, and it always breaks down cleaning in a way that isn’t overwhelming.
These are great tips. I am also a fellow clean freak and have had people say many times that my home doesn’t look “lived in” because of how clean it is, and I dont spend hours cleaning like most people. Little bit here, little bit there and a quick scrub on the weekend and that’s it. 🙂
My gosh you provide the coolest tips!!! I want to go make my own binder right now!
I thought I’d point out that your heading for “Morning Routine” is spelled “Mourning”! I had a giggle because I am SOOO tired today and I don’t want to clean, so it still fits. Not nitpicking – just thought it was cute. “I can relate,” I thought. 🙂
…and now I can’t help myself. Your blog is going to make me clean, regardless! Here I go.
I agree on your tips. It really doesn’t take long to straighten up and clean if you stay on top of it. My problem right now is that I’m stranded to the recliner with a broken ankle full of plates and screws. Can’t do the cleaning like I would like…and my husband and daughter are just not clean freaks like I am.
LOVE the Kaboom cleaning stuff!
I am sending you a million kisses for these tips!
Keep em’ comin’!
Following a daily routine and cleaning schedule is one of my greatest challenges!
TidyMom rocks {you know that…right?} 😉

This is a great post, Cheryl and I can’t wait to read the rest of this series. We always make sure the kitchen is clean before going to bed so we can come down to a clean kitchen/clean slate in the morning.
I’m all about routine and not letting the house get too dirty. Thanks for the tips!
I can never go to bed with my kitchen & family room messy. There have been times that I’ve actually gotten out of bed just to *tidy up* so that I could get to sleep. I just love waking up to a clean, fresh start!
It would be awesome if you put together a little chart for us to hang on our fridges with all of the daily, weekly, monthly, yearly chores in a nice little chart (for anal people…certainly not me ;)) Then we could print it off and be oh so organized and clean! That would be awesome!

You’re amazing Cheryl! I’m tired just reading this post.
Great tips Cheryl! Now that I’m in a much bigger house, I’m always trying to keep things in order!
I do a similar routine and it has shaved my life!! Doing it saves me from hours of cleaning. Thanks for posting this!!
Popped back over to take some notes~

Great tips! I’ve never tried Kaboom…think I’ll pick some up next time out! Thanks!
I’m going to love this series – I know it! Love seeing how Tidy Mom keeps tidy!
I love this! You remind me so much of my Mom! She taught us all of these things! This is how I totally am! Especially with the dishes..I can’t stand dirty dishes in my sink! I read your new post, I need to be better about dusting all my pictures…start now, easier later!
Thank you!
Kirsten
Great site, but morning routine—what about us women who work outside of the home full time? 5:30am comes too quickly for me to be doing laundry before going off to the office!
I did the morning routine when I worked full time outside my home.
If you do it each day, it doesn’t take much time……..then you get to come home to a clean house.
I use to be on your email list to receive daily cleaning tips. My computer crashed and now I can’t find where to sign up for this again. Suggestions? Thanks, Katherine
I’m sorry, I have never had an email list for daily cleaning tips. I do have an email list to receive updates when a new blog post is up. You can click here to subscribe –> https://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/emailsyndication?id=4g21p9r7frvs51prv8n547gi9s&divToShow=subscriptionMgmt
Great tips. I take it they’re meant for people who don’t have to work outside the home. A 10 to 14 hour work day doesn’t leave much time for most of the check lists. Maybe in my next life. 🙂
I actually did better with daily cleaning routines when I worked outside the home. I did a lot of picking up before bed and threw dishes in the dishwasher in the morning, throw in some laundry, one day I would dust, another I would vacuum all before leaving for work. Didn’t take me long if I stayed on top of it.
