Fresh Grapefruit Moscow Mule

It’s time to add some color to your life!

What better way to brighten up your day than with a fresh, colorful, and delicious Grapefruit Moscow Mule. This fun and fruity spring/summer sipper is the best thing that’s happened to the Moscow Mule since they decided to start serving it in copper mugs.

The fresh grapefruit, spicy ginger beer, and tangy lime juice mix together perfectly with just enough vodka to make this an equally sweet and boozy weekend drink.

Once you try your first sip, you’ll have one in your hand for the rest of the season.

How Did Moscow Mules Begin?

Moscow Mules actually have a really interesting back story. It all started in the 1940s at a bar in Manhattan that began serving the combination of ginger beer and vodka.

The bar wanted to give a drink a very unique look, so they special ordered copper mugs to serve the drink in and began to photograph all the patrons drinking their cocktail out of these fun cups.

Soon after, the photos began circulating, and it took off in American culture. From that point on the Moscow Mule was a household staple and is still served in homes and bars across America.

Why are they always in copper mugs?

I’m glad you asked, because contrary to popular belief, the copper mug isn’t just all about aesthetics when it comes to how we serve up a Moscow Mule.  Ask any Moscow aficionado and they will say they live and breathe by the copper mug standards.

For a drink that’s this well suited for summer, you need as much help as possible to keep the drink as cold and refreshing as the moment you got it. The cold metal from the copper mug is great at preserving the cold temperature of the liquid.

The copper also helps to enhance the individual flavors of the ginger beer, vodka, and lime. It can help and enhance the taste of the vodka and heighten the citrus of the lime, while also adding more fizz to the ginger beer.

What if I’m Not A Fan of Grapefruit?

I’d say that even if you aren’t a huge Grapefruit fan, don’t shy away from this cocktail. The grapefruit, while it complements the cocktail well, it does not shine through at the forefront of the flavor combo.

The grapefruit simply added a little bit of a tart flavor to mix with the spicy ginger beer and tangy lime juice. It creates an amazing balance for a cocktail you’ll love no matter what.

If you don’t believe me, I had two grapefruit haters try this cocktail and they agreed it was extremely refreshing and would drink it again. So, if they loved it, I think you will too!

Cocktail Making Tips For This Grapefruit Moscow Mule

Easily juice a grapefruit: A grapefruit is too big to use a lemon or lime juicer, so here’s a little hack I love to use: Using a small bowl that’s a little bit smaller than the size of the grapefruit, press it into the grapefruit to extract the juice while twisting the grapefruit against the bowl.

Chill the ingredients: Even though you’ll add ice to this cocktail, it’s best to work with chilled ingredients for the best results. Warm ingredients can tend to melt the ice and water down the cocktail.

Serve it in a copper mug: To take the preservation of a chilled cocktail a step further, serve it in a copper mug. It’s been shown that the copper helps insulate the drink and keep it ice cold and refreshing even longer.

Find the right ginger beer: Just like with most beverages, every brand has a different taste. I’ve played around with a lot of them, and have found that my personal favorite is Fever Tree. I love the level of spice they have, but feel free to sample a few different brands to find which one is right for you.
