Use strawberry, blueberry, and apple pie filling for a fabulous patriotic treat with little effort for any party.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Chill Time 2 hours
Total Time 2 hours 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 prepared angel food cake (I just pick one up at the grocery store bakery)
  • 1 (3.4 oz) package of vanilla instant pudding mix
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 1 (8oz) tub of whipped topping (Cool Whip)
  • 1 (21 oz) can Apple Pie Filling
  • 1 (21 oz) can Blueberry Pie Filling
  • 1 (21 oz) can Cherry Pie Filling
  • Fresh berries to garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk pudding mix and milk for 2 minutes. Set in refrigerator for 5 minutes, to soft set.
  2. Meanwhile, cut or tear cake into 1-inch cubes.
  3. Remove soft set pudding from refrigerator and gently fold in the whipped topping.
  4. Place 1/3 of the cake cubes on the bottom of a trifle bowl. Top with 1 can of pie filling and 1/3 of pudding mixture. Repeat layers ending with pudding mixture.
  5. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.
  6. Garnish with fresh fruit and mint leaves if desired.

Notes

SAVE A STEP: You can save a step and fold the cake cubes into the pudding mixture and just later pie filling and pudding/cake mixture ending with pie filling. Top with some extra whipped topping and fresh fruit.

MAKE OR BUY ANGEL FOOD CAKE: I like to make this dessert as quick and easy as possible, so I pick up an angel food cake from the grocery store bakery. But feel free to make the cake, if you prefer. Just make sure the cake is completely cool before cutting into cubes.

IF YOU WANT TO USE REAL WHIPPED CREAM: If you prefer real whipped cream, you can replace the whipped topping by whipping a pint of whipping cream with 1 teaspoon vanilla and 3 to 4 tablespoons sugar with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form.

MAKE IT LIGHTER: You could easily make this a little on the lighter side by using the sugar-free pudding, low-fat milk, light or fat-free Cool Whip and sugar-free Angel Food cake (Walmart sells them in their bakery)
