What Is Rye Bread Bowl Dip

Maybe you grew up enjoying the classic rye bread dip, but you’ve never made it.  Or, maybe you’ve just never heard of the sour cream and dill dip that’s served in a round loaf of rye bread.  Well, you’re in luck, it’s one of my family’s favorites and I’m going to share this age-old dip recipe with you today!

It always makes its way to any holiday party, and believe me, when I say that fits are thrown if there’s even a slight discussion of it not making the appetizer spread list. This creamy and perfectly spiced bread bowl dip paired with a fresh, soft loaf of rye bread, will have everyone crowding around stuffing their face until they can’t anymore.

You can easily whip up a batch of this must-have dip the night before any party or event, and watch it disappear in minutes, from the moment people start to arrive. You’ll love this easy-to-make, and even easier to enjoy rye bread dip, so let’s get started now!

Ingredients Needed

For specific amounts, please refer to the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.

Gather up a few key spices, your dip base, and a fresh loaf of bread to get you on your way to making the best appetizer you’ll have all year.

  • Round loaf of rye bread
  • Sour cream
  • Mayonnaise
  • Dill seed
  • Beau monde
  • Dried parsley flakes
  • Onion flakes

What Is Beau Monde?

Okay, I know you were most likely already scratching your head at the sight of beau monde in the ingredient list. It’s definitely a weird one that I had never heard of before making rye bread bowl dip, so here’s the rundown of beau monde, and why you don’t want to skip out on it for this recipe.

It’s a savory spice that is mainly made up of a blend of allspice, bay leaf, celery seed, and cinnamon. Cloves, mace, nutmeg, pepper, and salt are also some secondary ingredients used to make the complete spice blend.

If you can’t find a jar of official beau monde, I suggest mixing together this basic imitation blend:

Homemade Beau Monde

  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt.
  • 1/8 teaspoon onion powder.
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder.
  • 1/8 teaspoon celery seed.
  • 1/2 teaspoon seasoning salt.

How To Make Rye Bread Dip In A Bread Bowl

When you are making, you’ll want to use the full recipe at the bottom of the page.

This no-bake appetizer dip takes almost no time at all, and it can be made the night before, so you can have more time to focus on other recipes on the day of the event or special occasion.

To start, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, and seasonings in a medium bowl, then cover and refrigerate for several hours or overnight.

Before serving, use a bread knife to cut a large circle in the top of the bread and remove the top and tear out the inside of the bread to make room for the dip. Next, you’ll set the bread you removed aside for dipping.

Lastly, you’ll cut or tear the second loaf of bread into 1-inch cubes. Do the same with the pieces that were removed from inside the first loaf. Now, all that’s left to do is spoon the dip into hollowed-out bread and enjoy!

Recipe Tips And Notes

  • If you can’t find a round loaf of rye bread you can also use a pumpernickel boule or a round crusty sourdough bread. The dip works with just about any bakery bread you like, I have always loved it with the rye bread.
  • I know it’s tempting to dig in as soon as you have this drool-worthy rye bread bowl dip mixed up, but trust me it will be worth the wait. Do not skip the step to refrigerate for several hours or overnight. The time gives the ingredients a chance to mingle and become the best dip ever.
  • Don’t want to deal with making a bread bowl for serving? No problem! Serve the rye bread dip in a regular bowl and slice up all of the bread – or buy 2 loaves so you have more bread for dipping.

How To Store Rye Bread Dip

Do not place the rye bread bowl dip into the bread bowl until just before serving. If you store in the bread bowl overnight, the bread will get soggy and start to break down.

Remove any leftovers from the bread bowl, and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. I don’t suggest freezing your rye bread dip, as the sour cream might change consistency when thawed.

What To Serve With A Bread Bowl Dip?

Obviously, from the name of the recipe, I highly suggest serving it with a loaf of sliced-up rye bread dip, because it’s honestly the best, but there are plenty of other options for serving too.

Any bread crackers, or raw vegetables, like broccoli carrots, or cauliflower, are great options.

Tools Used To Make This Rye Bread Bowl Dip

Electric Knife

I’m in love with this kitchen tool! They are not a big investment (you can easily get one for $10-20 and they last forever) I’ve had one for as long as I can remember. Electric knives are so handy for carving meat, or something as simple as cutting up bread.

Bread Knife

A good quality bread knife is a must-have in the kitchen! I’ve had this knife for years and it still works beautifully, saving me from a sore arm any time I need to cut through a dense loaf of bread.

Bamboo Cutting Board

This is my go-to cutting board to use for simple chopping and slicing, and for serving. I love being able to quickly chop up vegetables or cheese for appetizers and serve them right from this stylish cutting board.
