Total cost was under $20! And took only a few hours to make.  Hands-on time was way less, most of the time was spent waiting for paint to dry.

DIY Color Block Tray supplies

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR DIY COLOR BLOCK TRAY

  • 18-inch unfinished pine wood round
  • 2 cabinet drawer pulls with screws
  • acrylic paint (I used 3 colors; navy blue, white and gold)
  • spray paint for pulls (optional)
  • sealer (I used a water-based sealer, like glue)
  • sponge brushes
  • painters tape
  • pencil
  • drill

DIY Color Block Tray tutorial steps 1-2

Since I was using gold as one of my colors, I wanted my handles to be gold as well.  So my first step was to spray paint the pulls in a gold metallic spray paint. This step is optional and only needed if you want to change the color of your pulls.

Next, I recommend painting the edge of the board one color, I choose white.  Give it two coats and let it dry.
DIY Color Block Tray tutorial steps 3-4

Since I designed my DIY color block tray with three colors, you have to work on one color section at a time.  To begin, use a piece of painters tape to mark off the section for your first color (I used white first).

Using a sponge brush, apply the first color of paint. Try to brush in the direction of the wood for a more natural and clean look. You will need to allow each coat of paint to dry completely then apply another coat. I applied about 2-3 coats.  Allow the last coat to dry, then carefully remove the tape.

To continue, make sure the first color is completely dry and lay a new piece of painters tape over the edge of the first color, and position another piece of tape to section off for your second color.

Repeat the steps for applying 2-3 coats of paint, remove the tape once the paint is dry, and continue the process for the third color.  Remember to be patient, and make sure each color is completely dry before taping off for the next color.

Once you have applied all three colors for the color block, you will want to seal the paint to protect it.  I used decoupage to seal.

For the final step, use a pencil to mark where you want your handles, pre-drill the screw holes, attach the handles with the screws and your DIY Color Block Tray is complete!

*note:  the tray is not food safe, food should NOT be placed directly on tray. Use a barrier between food and tray, such as a plate, bowl or dollies.
