If you know me at all, you know I’m a coffee lover.  Every day starts with a few steamy cups of joe, but sometimes in the middle of the day, I want an icy cold refreshing glass of iced coffee……cold brewed!   Last week we had a few unseasonably warm days, and eggnog in the fridge………so I made cold-brewed Eggnog Iced Coffee to get me thru the last bit of shopping, wrapping, and baking I had!

What is cold-brewed coffee

Cold-brewed coffee has a lower acidity level, yielding a smoother, slightly sweeter flavor.  Since the grounds never come into contact with boiling water, the final brew does not have that slightly bitter taste that drip coffee has.

If you head out to your favorite coffee shop, you’ll find that iced coffee is going to cost you more than a regular cup of hot coffee, and cold-brewed iced coffee will cost you even more.  But with a little planning ahead, you can save your cash and enjoy a cold-brewed iced coffee at home.

The secret to a good Iced Coffee

is patience and coffee ice cubes!

What’s the worst part about drinking any beverage over ice?  It becomes watered down as the ice melts.

Pour some of your cold brewed coffee into an ice cube tray, you can even add a little cream (I added eggnog this time) if you’d like and toss the tray into the freezer.  You will never have diluted iced coffee again……and I have been known to just grab a coffee ice cube or two for a quick snack on occasion!

Coffee Ice Cubes are the secret to good iced coffee

Making cold-brewed coffee is really very easy – you don’t HAVE to have a french press, but it does make the process a little easier, and I’ll be honest, it feels fancier pouring my coffee from a french press 😉

You simply soak coarsely ground coffee in water at least 12 hours (16-18 hours being ideal).

Then, if you are using a french press, you just press* and pour coffee into your glass that has been filled with coffee ice cubes.

*if you are not using a french press, strain twice through cheesecloth or a fine-mesh sieve.
