With the holidays fast approaching, I’m always trying to come up with simple handmade gifts for friends and family. Cue the gold paint………..today I am so excited to share with you one of my new favorite gift ideas I’m making this year…… hand painted mugs

These were so fun and easy to make, and would make a cute gift just by adding some candy, homemade hot chocolate mix, a loaf of your favorite quick bread or a batch of cookies!

I could see these mugs being used for holiday gifting, but they would also be perfect as a hostess or birthday gift or a fun DIY project for kids on a rainy day.  The paint markers and acrylic paint comes in a variety of colors, so the options are endless. I just love the gold for the holidays!

Supplies:

Inexpensive mugs: I picked up a few mugs at Target for $1.99, a gold paint marker (found at Michaels) , a stencil (I used the  Martha Stewart Holiday Stencils  I had), Glass or multi-surface acrylic paint (I used Martha Stewart Metallic multi-surface acrylic paint)  a sponge brush, paper plate.

Directions:

Wash and dry your mugs.

for gold dots

Press the tip of the paint maker down on a paper plate or towel until the paint come out. You only need to do this when you first start your project.

Use paint marker to free hand gold polk-a-dots or words on the mugs.

To stencil:  You only need a tiny bit of paint, so squeeze some out onto a paper plate.

place stencil on mug (you might want to tape stencil to the mug to hold it in place), dab a little paint on foam brush. Apply the paint with a light tapping motion until the stencil is filled in.

Carefully remove the stencil while the paint is still wet.

I think it took me ten minutes to paint 4 mugs!!  EASY PEASY!!

Allow the paint to cure by letting it air dry for 21 days, or, to cure quickly, bake the item in an oven. To cure in an oven, place the mugs in a cold oven, then set it to 350 degrees. Turn the oven off after 30 minutes and let the item cool in the oven. Wait 72 hours before using. They do not recommend oven curing the glitter paints.

I’m all about easy handmade gifts for the holidays!!
