So back in December, I shared my exciting news about becoming a partner with Weight Watchers as a Weight Watchers Insider.

With the release of the new PointsPlus program, Weight Watchers also released a cool iPad app called the Weight Watchers Kitchen Companion.  The really cool part………they sent me an iPad so I can use the Kitchen Companion app and tell you what I think about it!  Pretty awesome huh?!

So we’ve now had the ipad for a month and I doubt I have to tell you how much we love it, but I’m REALLY enjoying the Kitchen Companion!!

Instead of bombarding you with everything it does……..I thought I’d share a little at a time. There’s a lot to learn anyway, and I know there is even more that I haven’t even touched yet!!

One of our favorite little kitchen gizmos is our handy dandy hot drink-making machine…..the Latte Maker.

We use it to whip up all sorts of yummy concoctions in the winter time.  But often those yummy little treats can rack up the calories and fat!

The other night we decided to pull out the iPad, open up the Kitchen Companion and plug in our own recipe to see if we could get the points down to a healthier treat.

From the front page, select ‘Menu’ and then choose ‘Add New Recipe’.

When you enter your own recipe in the app, it shows you point value as you add ingredients, so you can make adjustments as you go along.

We found that by adjusting our ratio of flavored creamer to milk we could easily change point value.  1/3 cup creamer with 2/3 cup milk tasted every bit as good as 1/2 cup of each, and lowered the Weight Watchers Points Plus value.

The app can also help by giving you options on how to  ‘Lighten Up’ your recipe. For example, in this recipe I clicked ‘Add Ingredient’ then choose the “Lighten Up”  tab.  It then pulls up a list of ingredients that you might want to lighten up in a recipe, so in this case, MILK was an item in this recipe that is in the Lighten Up section.

Lighten Up – Milk – suggests Fat-Free milk, non-fat dry milk, evaporated fat free milk and pureed silken tofu.

It then goes on to suggest when you CAN use those substitutes, how to use them and when NOT to use them, along with a TIP on how to make your own whole milk substitute.

Pretty cool!

We opted for the 1% instead of the 2% milk we also had in the house.

When I was ready to enter our flavored creamer, it was not in the list of ingredients in the app, so you can choose to add your own ingredients. It asks for some information that you get right off the nutrition label and enters your item for you.  With this recipe a serving size on the creamer was one tablespoon, but we were going to use 1/3 cup in the recipe, so I measured it out and 5 tablespoons gave me 1/3 cup- so I chose 5 servings for the creamer when I entered it in the list of ingredients.

After you list all of your ingredients and directions, select Save and it will be added to the ‘My Recipes’ section.

We played with our ingredients and quantities until we got the points value that we felt was good, which in this case, we thought 3 points for a yummy treat was fair, and we didn’t compromise taste at all!

Want to make our recipe?  you can substitute with other flavors of liquid creamer if you’d like, but remember the points value may be different.
