Countdown to Clean Series: Monthly Routines

Part three in a four part series in how to clean your house and keep it clean.

In the past 2 weeks as part of the Countdown to Clean we covered what you can do daily  and weekly to keep your house from getting out of control. Today we will cover what you can do monthly.

There are a couple of ways to accomplish your monthly home-cleaning routines. First,  you could break it down and add two from the monthly list to each week’s ‘to do’ list . Or select one day out of the month to buckle down and knock off the whole list at once, which is what I usually do.

Monthly Cleaning

  • Vacuum lamp shades, upholstery , including under couch cushions
  • Dust air vents, ceiling fans, light fixtures and moldings
  • Clean the top of the fridge and kitchen cabinets
  • Clean inside windows and window sills.
  • Wash and deodorize insides of garbage cans and wastebaskets
  • Clean washer, dish washer and coffee pot by running vinegar water thru them
  • Flip mattresses

With the right home-cleaning routine under your belt, your home can stay clean enough to allow unexpected guests without worrying about what they might see. {wink}  There is no right way to create a home cleaning schedule.  The correct routine will be the one that works the best for your lifestyle so you can stick with it!

Loving this series on how to clean your house and keep it clean – need to tape these onto my fridge!

  2. 2

This series is great. I do all of this stuff but I’m not very organized about it, especially the monthly stuff. Not sure when I last did a few of those types of chores. I am going to use this to help get me more organized and on track, especially with the busy holiday season approaching.

I sooo need to do this, especially the mattress flipping part. That is one thing I never do but really should.

  4. 4

I need to give this a go. I’m so unorganized about my cleaning that I dread it so much I hiss and moan about it all the way through. Being organized would help me just make it a task oriented chore that I could probably get through much more pleasantly.

What a great series! Thank you for the tips!

  6. 6

Great tips for cleaning and who doesn’t love arm and hammer products!

  7. 7

Great tips! Any chance you’ll offer a printable version of the series? =D
    Thanks!

This would make a great printable that can be laminated, Cheryl! Love all these tips!

I really should follow this guide. Thank you!! =)

Cleaning, it’s unavoidable and seemingly never ending but we all have to do it. I’m pretty much of a clean freak and like *a place for everything and everything in it’s place* (I blame it on my military upbringing) and was pretty much raised to be a *clean as you go and pick-up after yourself* type. Like having a maintenance schedule for the exterior of the home, garage and the furnace, fireplace, big appliances etc., I find my home easier to manage by having a cleaning schedule too and yours are very good. Our new mattress does not require turning or flipping anymore but I do it anyway, but only every six months (I also vacuum it and all the others in our home once a month).

    love this series as always!

Thanks for the reminder to flip the mattress, I can’t remember the last time we did that!

I just love these posts, Cheryl. Cleaning out the fridge is something I find very cathartic. There’s nothing like opening the fridge to see sparkling clean shelves and organized food.

  14. 14

I’m taking notes, but I’m not making any promises yet!

I get so excited for these! Thank you again for reminding me to clean the things that I am too short to see ;)

your list is great ! im crazy about cleaning too :D i enjoy it ;-) an old toothbrush is useful for cleaning tiny cobwebs in corners / gaps you cant clean with a vacuum cleaner. a duster (has a long extendable stick with a soft hairy mop end ) is very useful for dry dusting celing corners/borders, again that is difficult to do with a vacuum cleaner. i cant do without a ladder…useful for things you can’t reach

I need help with the cleaning “routine”. Bad. I get so overwhelmed when I think of all I have to do!!
I’m about to go pull out the vacuum…lol (my favorite cleaning chore to do!)

Is there a way to print all of the how to clean your house monthly together?
