Black & White Cupcakes

Last weekend I had the pleasure of making cupcakes for my cousin’s college graduation party. My Aunt wanted black and white cupcakes.

Black & White cupcakes

We decided to make half the cupcakes French Vanilla

and the other half Dark Chocolate Fudge.

I used the Perfect Cupcake (using a mix) recipe posted here.

I didn’t want to use black icing………..have you ever had black icing?……

This is what happened when we had black icing a few years ago!LOL

I bought some Bright White Gel Paste Food Color and Black Chunky Sugar from Layer Cake Shop.

My Aunt did a fabulous job making the cupcake wraps and decorated the cupcake tower by placing printed paper in the center, and a black scallop trim on the edges. ~We had a few problems with the wraps, so we didn’t use very many of them and they would have been too tall for the cupcake stand any way.

(you can click any of the pictures to get to flickr and chose to view a larger size for more details)

My Aunt also made the paper flowers that are hanging over the cupcake table! Aren’t they fabulous?! She has directions we can follow……but Diane of Created by Diane just happened to write a great Paper flowers tutorial post!

I was just so excited about how these turned out….I wanted to share!

    You can send me my cupcake via FedEx. ;) They are gorgeous!!! I can see why you'd want to steer clear of black icing. I'm doing some tomorrow for my little one's bday party on Saturday. We're sticking with pink and purple. ;

    ALSO, so cool that you linked to the paper flowers tutorial. I wanted to do some for the party, but haven't found a link that looked easy enough for me to follow yet. This one might do the trick. :)

    The cupcakes and the flowers are beautiful. What a great party.

    Oh yeah, the black icing, kids love it, but it's soooo gross to watch them (or anyone for that matter) consume it. It gets everywhere.

    Gorgeous! I recall making those paper flowers in grade school, or was it with my mom???? It was long ago, and they were fun today…that much I still remember! Your photos are great! You might want to check out my niece's blog called Prudent Baby, as it is on the same idea as yours, lots of baking, making, and taking (photos)!!! Liz from Brown & Hopkins

    Cute photo of your kids with the black icing. Navy Blue has similar effects. When my oldest daughter graduated, her school colors were navy and orange, so I had a cake decorated in those colors. Everyone at the party who had cake had blue lips and tongues. It made for a fun party. I love the cupcake wrappers with the cupcakes- they look like little gift packages all lined up on the cake stands. Very pretty

    These are absolutely the most elegant cupcakes I've ever seen! Is there any chance you could talk your aunt into sharing with us how she made the wrappers? They are GORGEOUS!
